NO SHORTAGE OF THINGS TO SEE, DO, MAKE AND EAT AT K-STATE'S ALL-UNIVERSITY
OPEN HOUSE APRIL 14 IN MANHATTAN AND SALINA
MANHATTAN
-- Looking for something to do? How about an event that combines
entertainment, food, games, children's activities, interactive displays
and educational exhibits on a vibrant college campus.
Kansas
State University's All-University Open House is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, April 14 on the Manhattan and Salina campuses. The event
is free. Open house is K-State's biggest recruiting event of the
year. This means:
*
K-State estimates that about 20,000 visitors will come to campus.
*
The All-University Open House Web site will get about 7,000 hits.
*
More than 90 student life exhibits will be on display in the K-State
Student Union.
*
K-State's bakery science and management students will give away
about 2,100 baked goods.
*
K-State mails about 41,000 invitations.
*
More than 50 student volunteers wearing "Lost?" T-shirts
will help people find their way around.
*
Visitors will eat more than 200 gallons of Call Hall ice cream.
At
open house, visitors can learn more about K-State's academics and
student life through tours, exhibits, games and interactive displays,
with food and entertainment thrown in. Faculty and students will
be on hand to answer questions about K-State's more than 250 majors.
Some
open house highlights include:
Interactive
displays:
*
Glass blowing demonstrations at the chemistry department's display,
10 a.m. and 2 p.m., 4 King Hall, and a magic show at 11 a.m. and
1 p.m., 114 Willard Hall.
*
Hair-raising physics demonstrations, 143 Cardwell Hall, and a tour
of the accelerator, 1:30 p.m., James R. Macdonald Laboratory in
Cardwell Hall.
*
Ice-carving demonstrations by the hotel and restaurant management
program, 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m., Justin Hall patio.
Special
projects:
*
Learn about a solar-powered house being designed by K-State architecture
students, Pierce Commons, east wing of Seaton Hall.
*
See strength-testing demonstrations on a concrete canoe, National
Gas Machinery Laboratory, K-State at Salina.
*
Watch competition robots in action, engineering complex.
Hands-on
activities:
*
Make a "Who wants to be a Wildcat?" trading card, Calvin
Hall.
*
Try balance, auditory and visual exercises, 112 Bluemont Hall.
*
See how petting an animal can relax facial muscles, 104 Trotter
Hall.
Children's
events:
*
Stuffed animal clinic, small animal lobby at the Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital, Mosier Hall.
*
Meet the Cat in the Hat, listen to stories and make bookmarks, 113
Bluemont Hall.
*
Carnival games like miniature golf, cakewalk, beanbag toss, ring
toss and balloon popping, Calvin Hall.

Pig out on a porkburger, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mosier Hall.
*
Open Air Cafe, food served by hotel and restaurant management students,
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Justin Hall patio.
*
Treats made by bakery science and management students, 108 Shellenberger
Hall.
Entertainment:
*
Kansas City Marching Cobras drill team, noon, Bosco Plaza.
*
Live local music, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Bosco Plaza.
*
International parade, 2 p.m., Bosco Plaza
*
Presentation by two stars of "MythBusters," 7 p.m. Friday,
April 13, McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $6 and can be purchased
by calling 785-532-6428.
Tours:
*
Campus walking tours leave every half hour from the admissions booth
at the K-State Student Union. The 1 p.m. tour will be given in both
English and Spanish.
*
Shuttle buses leave from the south side of the union every 15 minutes
to places across campus, like the Peters Recreation Complex, residence
halls and more.
