K-STATE SPOTLIGHT ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LUNCHEON SET FOR APRIL 13

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University Research Foundation, the Kansas State University Foundation, the K-State Alumni Association and the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce are sponsors of an annual event to recognize K-State inventors, patent holders and other creators of intellectual property.

The fourth annual Spotlight on Intellectual Property will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the K-State Alumni Center Ballroom. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. This year's event is in conjunction with the first K-State Invention to Venture Workshop, an introduction to technology entrepreneurship.

Keynote speaker for the 2007 luncheon is Thomas V. Thornton, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Bioscience Authority. He will discuss bioscience wealth creation in Kansas.

Thornton was appointed in fall 2006. He previously was with the Illinois Technology Development Alliance, which he helped create and for which he served as the first president. He is recognized as a successful early-stage venture capital investor and a leader in creating public/private technology development initiatives.

Thornton received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a dual major in political science and history. He was director of policy in the office of U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert, former speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Kansas Bioscience Authority was created in 2004 when Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed into law the Kansas Economic Growth Act. The authority is an independent entity of the state and is governed by a board that includes local and national leaders in the areas of science, technology and business. The authority is charged with investing more than $580 million to achieve the key goals of the act, which center around creating a world-class bioscience industry in Kansas through fostering the growth of bioscience in the state, as well as making Kansas a national leader in bioscience and a desirable location for bioscience organizations to locate and grow.During the Spotlight on Intellectual Property, K-State researchers who were issued a U.S. Patent in 2006 will be honored:

* Kenneth J. Klabunde Olga Koper and Abbas Khaleel were issued a patent for porous pellet adsorbents fabricated from nanocrystals.

* Frank Blecha and Jishu Shi were issued a patent for synthetic peptides that inhibit leukocyte superoxide anion production and/or attract leukocytes.

* Bing Shan, Chun Wang and Zenghu Chang were issued a patent for a high peak-power kilohertz laser system employing single-stage multipass amplification.

* Xiaoyan Tang worked with a consortium of four institutions and was issued a patent for nucleic acids encoding pseudomonas hop proteins and use thereof.

Tickets for the luncheon are $15 for students and $20 for all others. To make luncheon reservations call 785-532-5720 or email tech.transfer@k-state.edu before the Wednesday, April 4, deadline.
