LIBRARIES TO CELEBRATE FEDERAL DEPOSITORY CENTENNIAL
MANHATTAN
-- Kansas State University's K-State Libraries will recognize
the 100th anniversary of participation in the Federal Depository
Library Program.
A
centennial celebration program will be 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, April
10, in the Government Documents area at K-State's Hale Library.
Making remarks will be U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda of Kansas and state
Rep. Sydney Carlin, Manhattan.
K-State,
along with 42 other land-grant universities, was added to the Federal
Depository Library Program in 1907. Through the program, K-State
has received government publications on paper, microfiche, floppy
disk, CD-ROM and DVD. An increasing number of publications also
are being made available online.
Students,
faculty and staff, as well as the general public, can use these
publications and receive assistance from trained library staff.
Resources include current and historical laws and regulations, congressional
activities, essential and baseline statistical information, and
research reports on subjects from agriculture to business and energy.
The collection currently has more than 3 million items.
Outreach
to non-university users is an important part of K-State's land-grant
mission, and serving as a federal depository is one way this mission
is achieved at the K-State Libraries.
Established
by Congress, the Federal Depository Library Program provides the
citizens of the United States with vital access to government information.
Public, no-fee access to this information remains the highest priority
of all federal depository libraries.
Nearly
1,250 libraries participate in the Federal Depository Library Program
today. K-State is one of 18 depository libraries in Kansas.
