NEW
YORK TIMES COLUMNIST, PRINCETON ECONOMIST TO PRESENT LECTURE AT
K-STATE ON AMERICAN HEALTH CARE
MANHATTAN
-- Princeton University economist and New York Times columnist
Paul Krugman will speak at Kansas State University Thursday, March
15.
Krugman
will present "The Crisis in American Health Care" at 7:30
p.m. in Forum Hall, K-State Student Union. The lecture is being
presented by K-State's department of economics.
Lloyd
Thomas, professor and head of the department of economics at K-State,
encourages students, faculty and members of the community to come
out to hear Krugman speak.
"Paul
Krugman is one of the very rare great economists who can cut through
to the essence of the most important issues of the times and communicate
the relevant economic analysis to a non-economist with great clarity,"
Thomas said.
Krugman
received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and his doctorate
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before beginning
his career at Princeton, Krugman taught at Yale, MIT and Stanford.
He has written many books, including textbooks such as the "Principles
of Economics" and "International Economics: Theory and
Policy." He also has written for such publications as Fortune
and Slate magazines, the Harvard Business Review, The Economist
and Washington Monthly. Krugman began writing for The New York Times
in 2000.
According
to Thomas, Krugman established his economics reputation in the area
of international finance with his innovative work on foreign exchange
crises. In 1991, Krugman was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal.
The honor is given by the American Economic Association every two
years in recognition of the foremost American economist under the
age of 40.
Krugman
will also speak on "Will There be a Dollar Crisis" at
9:30 a.m. Friday, March 16, in Room 328 Waters Hall. Both lectures
are free and open to the public.
