SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING WORKSHOP AVAILABLE AT K-STATE FOR GIRLS IN EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADES

MANHATTAN -- Four days of engineering, math and science exploration is the agenda planned for eighth- and ninth-grade girls July 8-11 at Kansas State University.

The sixth annual EXCITE! Workshop will feature hands-on activities led by K-State faculty, as well as industry tours geared toward the eight workshop tracts of biofuels, computer-gaming design, nano-scale polymers, nano-sensors, robotics, designing spaces, green roof design and principles of flight.

The EXCITE! Program, which stands for EXploring sCIence, Technology and Engineering, is sponsored by K-State's Women in Engineering and Science Program and receives industry support from Cerner, ScriptPro, Perceptive Software, Latmier Sommers and Associates, Spirit Aero Systems, Abengoa Bioenergy Corporation, BNIM and the Discovery Center.

Registration fee is $200, which includes room and board, workshop materials and a T-shirt. A limited number of financial scholarships are available.

Teachers from across the state can also participate in a graduate course, Engineering and Gender in the Classroom, offered in conjunction with the EXCITE! Workshop. Presented by Jacqueline Spears, associate professor of secondary education at K-State, the class will include discussion and instruction on gender issues affecting science and math education.

All teachers participating in the workshop will be paid an honorarium of $275 or receive a free graduate credit for the course, and will receive a $150 scholarship for one female student from their high school to attend the four-day event. Up to three scholarships per school can be awarded if the teacher brings Latina, immigrant or first-generation-college female students.
