TIP SHEET: K-STATE FOOD SAFETY EXPERT OFFERS ADVICE ONLINE IN THE FORMS OF BARFBLOG AND DONTEATPOOP.COM
MANHATTAN -- Through a Web site reminding people "Don’t eat poop" and a barfblog, a group of individuals at Kansas State University are committed to making the world's food safer.
Douglas Powell, scientific director of the International Food Safety Network at K-State oversees the food safety Web site Don't Eat Poop at http://donteatpoop.k-state.edu/
and a barfblog at http://barfblog.foodsafety.ksu.edu/
From produce to peanut butter and pet food, imports and outbreaks, Powell provides commentary about today's food safety issues from the farm to the kitchen. Powell leads a team of undergraduate and graduate students who want to make food safety a pop-culture phenomenon and change the way the
world thinks about food. Through barfblog, they comment daily on food safety happenings including such categories such as celebrity barf and the "yuck" factor. At the height of the E. coli O157:H7 spinach outbreak in 2006, Powell noted that people who got sick were eating cow feces and advised, "Don't Eat Poop." T-shirts encouraging proper hand washing -- and to not eat poop -- are available in English, French, Chinese and Spanish.
