K-STATE'S LAFENE HEALTH CENTER PRESENTS AWARDS TO STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's Lafene Health Center has presented Outstanding Student Leadership Awards to two students for their volunteer service and leadership while participating in health center-sponsored student organizations.

Award recipients are Lindsay Hicks, a May 2007 bachelor's graduate in psychology, Emporia, and Angela Hasemann, a May 2007 bachelor's graduate in kinesiology and human nutrition and a senior in dietetics, Scribner, Neb.

Hicks received the award for her volunteer participation in Lafene's Sexual Health Awareness Peer Education, or SHAPE, program for the last three and one-half years.

"Lindsay has been an excellent leader and role model not only for the organization, but also for her peers on campus," said Carol Kennedy, faculty adviser to the group. "She is dedicated to educating her peers and striving to increase awareness of sexual health issues for college students."

Hicks served as 2006-2007 president of the Sexual Health Awareness Peer Education program; she previously served as treasurer. In addition to her leadership responsibilities with the organization, she made more than 20 presentations to campus groups on behalf of the program.

Her other activities have included Relay For Life, K-State's Criminology Club and as a leader for Enhanced University Experience. She also was a College of Arts and Sciences ambassador, a court appointed special advocate, a juvenile intensive supervision intern for Community Corrections and a Crisis Center volunteer.

Hicks plans to continue her studies at Washington University's George Warren Brown School of Social Work in St. Louis, Mo.

Hasemann received the award for her outstanding leadership in the Sensible Nutrition And body image Choices, or SNAC, peer education program. Hasemann was 2006-2007 president of the group, and served as publicity chair in 2005-2006.

"Angie was an outstanding peer educator who I'd love to clone and keep as a student leader," said Dianna Schalles, faculty adviser to Sensible Nutrition And body images Choices. "She demonstrated a true gift for motivating her fellow peers and organizing them as a team to accomplish the group's mission."

In addition to her participation in Sensible Nutrition And body image Choices, Hasemann was 2006-2007 president of the Health and Nutrition Society and was active in the Women in Engineering and Science Program, Women Mentoring Women, K-State Student Dietetic Association, K-State Kinesiology Student Association and Northeast Kansas Officials Association. She also served as an athletic tutor, Healthy PAC-CATS mentor and was an intramural supervisor with K-State recreational services.

"Angie's dedication to SNAC was an inspiration for our younger members. She was the best student leader I have witnessed as an adviser and her contributions will benefit SNAC for many years to come," Schalles said.

After completing her bachelor's degree in dietetics this summer, Hasemann will take part in the Augusta Area Dietetic Internship, a 10-month program in Augusta, Ga.
