NEW K-STATE DOCTORAL GRADUATE EARNS FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AWARD: Former McPherson resident Nathan Schultheiss, who earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from K-State in May, has received a Fulbright Scholar award from the Alsace Regional Council in France.

K-STATE VETERINARY DIAGNOSTICS LAB TO DEBUT NEW BOVINE HEALTH TEST: The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a part of Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, will be the first laboratory in the nation to use a newly developed, highly sensitive test to accurately detect bovine viral diarrhea virus, also called BVDV.

SCOTT McCLOUD TO PRESENT TALK AT K-STATE ON STATUS OF AMERICAN COMICS: Scott McCloud, who has both written comics and written about comics, is coming to Kansas State University. K-STATE VETERINARY STUDENTS TO GO PAPERLESS: This fall Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine will require its first-year students to use laptops and electronic notes.

K-STATE ENGINEERING STUDENT AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP FROM NATIONAL SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS: Kansas State University's Jeremy Dreiling, a master's student in architectural engineering, Hays, has been awarded the 2007-2008 Professional Engineers in Industry Scholarship from the National Society of Professional Engineers.

K-STATE BIOCHEMIST CONTRIBUTES TO ARTICLE IN SCIENCE MAGAZINE COMPARING GENES INVOLVED IN INSECTS' IMMUNITY AND THEIR ABILITY TO SPREAD DISEASE: A Kansas State University biochemist's contributions to research on immune systems in mosquitoes are part of a journal article appearing in Science magazine.

MARY TODD NAMED DIRECTOR OF K-STATE WOMEN'S CENTER; SUSAN ALLEN TO BE DIRECTOR OF NONVIOLENCE EDUCATION: Mary Todd has become director of the Women's Center at Kansas State University. Formerly the center's assistant director and a crisis advocate for the past five years, Todd takes the job over from Susan Allen, who has been named director of nonviolence education for the university.

K-STATE GROUP SPONSORING BUS TRIP TO LINCOLN TO TOUR INTERNATIONAL QUILT STUDIES CENTER AND TWO QUILT EXHIBITS: An upcoming bus trip sponsored by The Friends of the Costume and Textile Museum at Kansas State University will take participants to the International Quilt Studies Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as well as two special exhibits on quilts, also at the university.

K-STATE STUDENTS EARN SEMESTER, GRADUATION HONORS: Kansas State University is awarding more than 1,700 students semester honors for their academic performance during the 2007 spring semester. In addition, more than 400 students are earning May 2007 graduation honors in recognition of their outstanding academic performance as undergraduates.

K-STATE EXPERT ON JOHN PHILIP SOUSA SAYS THE FAMOUS AMERICAN COMPOSER WAS PROUD TO BE KNOWN FOR HIS PATRIOTIC MUSIC: For many in the United States, John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever" is as much a part of the Fourth of July as parades and fireworks. According to a Sousa expert at Kansas State University, the prolific American composer would have wanted it that way. "It's hard to think of anyone being more patriotic than Sousa," said Craig B. Parker, K-State associate professor of music history.

K-STATE JOURNALISTS HELP HATCH NATIONWIDE DIGITAL NEWS INCUBATOR: A recent grant will help students at the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas State University take "participatory journalism" beyond the blog. K-State will share the $230,000 Knight Foundation award with six other journalism programs across the country.

JANA HAWLEY JOINING K-STATE AS HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF APPAREL, TEXTILES AND INTERIOR DESIGN: Jana M. Hawley, an internationally known scholar in textile recycling and the apparel industry, has been named head of the department of apparel, textiles and interior design in the College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University.

K-STATE PROJECT AIMS TO MAKE SODIUM-COOLED NUCLEAR REACTORS SAFE, EFFICIENT: The K-State department of mechanical and nuclear engineering has received a three-year, approximately $550,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Research Initiative for the project "Experimental Development and Demonstration of Ultrasonic Measurement Diagnostics for Sodium Fast Reactor Thermohydraulics."

K-STATE TEAM WINS STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION AT ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING CONFERENCE: A team of five students from Kansas State University won the Student Design Competition at the 2007 American Ecological Engineering Society's annual meeting, May 21-25, at K-State. The winning project was a rain garden microcosm.

K-STATE AT SALINA HONORS OUTSTANDING STUDENTS: Outstanding work and dedication to causes both inside and outside the classroom has earned several students at Kansas State University at Salina some special honors. The students were recognized at K-State at Salina's recent 2006-2007 Awards and Recognition Banquet.

K-STATE SMALL ANIMAL SURGEON SAYS SOME COMMON HUMAN INJURIES ALSO COMMON IN DOGS: Like their human owners, dogs are at risk of suffering broken bones, torn ligaments, arthritis and congenital diseases. Fortunately for both pet owner and pet, there are veterinarians who can treat these ailments and get pets back on their feet. James Roush, an orthopedic surgeon at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Kansas State University, is one such veterinarian.

K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN STUDENTS EARN AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS: Several Kansas State University students in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design have earned scholarships and awards for their academic work and contributions during the 2006-2007 school year.

K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF HUMAN ECOLOGY MAKES INTERIM ADMINISTRATIVE APPOINTMENTS PERMANENT: Two interim administrators with Kansas State University's College of Human Ecology have been named to their posts permanently by Virginia Moxley, dean of the college. Briana S. Nelson Goff has been promoted from the college's interim assistant dean for academic affairs to associate dean for academic affairs, while Denis Medeiros has become the college's permanent associate dean for scholarship and research.

CANCER RESEARCHER MAKES A PLACE FOR HIMSELF AT K-STATE: Alexander Beeser is settling into his professorial role at Kansas State University. He has furnished his new lab in Ackert Hall and has the help of a visiting summer research assistant.

ART HAS HELPED COUPLE FIND THEIR PLACE IN KANSAS: If home is where the heart is, for this couple, it's also where the art is. Collecting artworks of the Great Plains has helped Marjorie Swann and Bill Tsutsui feel at home in their adopted state of Kansas. To share this with others, part of their personal collection will be on view at Kansas State University's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art through Aug. 26.

K-STATE HISTORY PROFESSOR NAMED A TOP YOUNG HISTORIAN BY THE HISTORY NEWS NETWORK: A Kansas State University history professor has been named a top young historian by the History News Network. The network selected K-State's David Stone for the distinction based on his contribution to the discipline in his area of research through his commitment and achievement in scholarship and teaching.

ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR K-STATE GROW WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS: How do roller coasters stay on their tracks? How does combustion provide useful energy? These topics, plus a robotics competition, introduction to global positioning system technology, experiments to discover what causes allergies, exploring the wonders of geometry and more, are the sessions planned for sixth- and seventh-grade girls taking part in the eighth annual Girls Researching Our World -- or GROW -- Summer Workshop on the Kansas State University campus, June 18-20.

CARLIN APPOINTED K-STATE INTERIM VICE PROVOST FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Lynn Carlin has been named interim vice provost for information technology at Kansas State University. She will start her new job July 1.

27TH ANNUAL K-STATE RAPID METHODS AND AUTOMATION IN MICROBIOLOGY WORKSHOP JUNE 15-22: Kansas State University's 27th annual Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology workshop will be June 15-22. The workshop is under the direction of K-State's Daniel Y.C. Fung, an internationally known authority in the field and professor of animal sciences and industry and food science.

K-STATE AERO DESIGN TEAM PLACES SIXTH IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: Kansas State University's Aero Design Team placed sixth out of 47 teams in the Aero Design East competition, May 4-6, in Fort Worth, Texas. K-State was third among U.S. teams in the international competition.

K-STATE'S LAFENE HEALTH CENTER PRESENTS AWARDS TO STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP: Kansas State University's Lafene Health Center has presented Outstanding Student Leadership Awards to two students for their volunteer service and leadership while participating in health center-sponsored student organizations.

K-STATE EXPERT ON PUTIN SAYS RUSSIAN PRESIDENT'S RESPONSE TO U.S. MISSILES, RADAR IN EUROPE NOT OUT OF CHARACTER: Russian President Vladimir Putin's resistance to the United States' plans to place missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic is not out of character, according to a Kansas State University expert on the Russian leader.

K-STATE POWERCAT TRACTOR TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE AT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: For the second consecutive year and the sixth time in the 10-year history of the event, the Kansas State University Powercat Tractors Design Team finished first at the annual American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition, May 31-June 3, in Peoria, Ill.

K-STATE TEAM TAKES FIRST IN NATIONAL SENSORY DESIGN COMPETITION: The idea -- get sixth-graders to use their five senses to develop better food habits. The goal -- lower the prevalence of obesity in children. The plan won a team of five Kansas State University College of Human Ecology students first place in the recent third annual Elaine Skinner Memorial Sensory Design Competition, a nationwide contest. It's also the third win in the competition for K-State.

JAN ELSASSER NEW DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT FOR K-STATE STUDENT LIFE: Jan Elsasser has been named director of information management for student life at Kansas State University. Elsasser, who also serves as associate director of technology for the K-State office of admissions, will be responsible for information technology needs related to K-State student life.

KOELLIKER NAMED INTERIM DEPARTMENT HEAD: James Koelliker was named interim head of the department of civil engineering at Kansas State University, effective June 1.

K-STATE SIGNS 2 + 2 AGREEMENTS WITH PRATT COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Kansas State University and Pratt Community College have developed two 2 + 2 agreements, which will allow place-bound students in the Pratt area to earn a bachelor's degree through K-State distance education.

K-STATE DOCTORAL STUDENT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION NEW VICE-PRESIDENT OF KANSAS FEDERATION OF THE COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN: Robert Bruce Scott, a doctoral student in special education at Kansas State University, was installed as vice-president of the Kansas Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children June 1 in Atchison.

ELECTRONIC THESIS IS AWARD WINNER FOR PETE SOUZA, THE INTERNATIONAL PHOTOJOURNALIST, FORMER WHITE HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHER AND K-STATE GRAD: An electronic thesis by international photojournalist, former White House photographer and recent Kansas State University graduate Pete Souza is an award winner. Souza, a December 2006 K-State master's graduate in journalism and mass communications, has received one of six 2007 Electronic Theses and Dissertations awards from the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.

K-STATE AT SALINA RECOGNIZES TWO FACULTY MEMBERS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE: Greg Spaulding and Kathy Brockway, associate professors at Kansas State University at Salina, have been recognized for the way they take their job in the classroom personally.

GRUENBACHER TO BE NEW HEAD OF K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING: Don Gruenbacher has been named head of the department of electrical and computer engineering at Kansas State University, effective Aug. 12.

MAES IS NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF CONTINUING EDUCATION: Kansas State University has appointed Sue C. Maes, an expert on building new academic programs and fostering institutional collaboration, to be interim dean of the Division of Continuing Education. She will take up her new duties July 1.

K-STATE RECOGNIZES TWO FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO STUDENTS: An assistant professor of architectural engineering and the coordinator of new student services at Kansas State University have been rewarded for their nurturing attitude toward students.
