RECENT K-STATE GRADUATE RECEIVES FULBRIGHT TO TEACH IN GERMANY
MANHATTAN -- Elizabeth Holste, a May 2008 Kansas State University bachelor's graduate in history, has been awarded a Fulbright student scholarship to Germany.
Holste, Ludell, is among more than 1,450 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2008-2009 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. student program.
"The Fulbright, because it supports study in many different countries and entertains proposals from almost all majors, offers K-Staters a great way to seek international experience after they complete their undergraduate degree," said James Hohenbary, K-State assistant dean for nationally competitive scholarships. "It is really great to see Libby capitalize on such a unique opportunity."
Holste, who also earned a minor in German from K-State, will teach English to German high school students in Mainz, a city of 200,000 in west-central Germany.
"I am there not only as a teaching assistant, but also to give the kids a look at American culture firsthand," Holste said. "I will have topics to discuss, such as college life over here, our political system, and other issues that they may not be aware of, although I think many Europeans are more up to date on our current events than most Americans."
Holste is the daughter of Lea and Chuck Holste, Ludell.
She will go to Germany in September and return in June 2009. As a junior she spent a semester in northern Germany near Hamburg. "This will be a new area for me to live," she said, "and I will be there for twice as long."
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation by Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program has provided 286,500 Americans and foreign citizens the opportunity to observe each others' political, economic, educational and cultural institutions. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement as well leadership potential.
