K-STATE STUDENTS EARN SECOND PLACE IN STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION FOR HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University architectural engineering students have won second place in the 2008 Student Design Project Competition sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

The K-State students took second place in the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system selection category of the international competition, which featured collegiate teams from across the country and the world. The K-State students included James Mahoney, senior in architectural engineering, Overland Park; Ashley Weeks, a May 2008 bachelor's graduate in architectural engineering, Columbus, Miss.; and Kevin Chow, a May 2008 bachelor's graduate in architectural engineering, Independence, Mo.

The students were members of a special architectural engineering class, offered as an elective in the spring semester, specifically for the competition. The class is led by Julia Keen, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction science, and Fred Hasler, instructor of architectural engineering and construction science.

For the competition, the K-State students had to select a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system for a 60,000 square-foot community recreational center in a residential area in Nashville, Tenn. The facility included a two-court gymnasium, two racquetball courts, natatorium, showers and lockers, a wellness center and an aerobics area.

K-State has a history of success in the competition, finishing first in 2007 and placing in the top five this year and in 2003 and 2004.

The competition is to encourage undergraduate students to become involved in the heating, a ventilating and air-conditioning engineering profession, to apply their knowledge to practical design use and to promote teamwork.

For finishing second in this year's competition, one of the members of the K-State team will get to attend the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' January 2009 winter meeting in Chicago, Ill., to accept the team's award.
