K-STATE WINS APPEAL IN COLLEGIAN CASE: With the decision by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to dismiss the appeal of a First Amendment rights case against Kansas State University, officials at K-State say it is time to move on.

'GRAB AND GO' CAFE TO OPEN IN K-STATE'S HALE LIBRARY: The age-old prohibition against food and drink in the library goes out the window in mid-August when Kansas State University's Hale Library opens a coffee shop on its first floor.

RIVERA JOINS K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF HUMAN ECOLOGY AS COORDINATOR FOR ACADEMIC SERVICES AND DIVERSITY: To Madai Rivera, diversity means that differences among people are valued and appreciated. As new coordinator for academic services and diversity in Kansas State University's College of Human Ecology, Rivera will continue the campaign to draw a wider variety of students to its programs.

K-STATE STUDENTS ATTEND NEW DATA SCIENCES SUMMER INSTITUTE, WORK ON PROJECTS THAT COULD ONE DAY HELP WITH HOMELAND SECURITY: A Kansas State University faculty member and six of his students participated in a new information science institute this summer created to prepare future leaders in the field and to work on projects that may one day help with homeland security.

CHILDREN'S DAY CAMP BEING OFFERED AT K-STATE AUG. 6-10: Kansas State University's Community Health Institute is sponsoring a special day camp Aug. 6-10 for children in grades 4-6. L.I.F.E 4 Kids Day Camp will be 8-11 a.m. each day in K-State's Ahearn Field House.

K-STATE'S HALE LIBRARY FEATURES POP-UP BOOKS EXHIBITION: Pop-up books are the subject of a new exhibition now on display through Sept. 28 at Kansas State University's Hale Library. "Pop Art: The Artistry of Paper Engineering" is available 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays in the library's gallery on the fifth floor. Admission is free.

WASHINGTON, D.C., AEROSPACE FLIGHT ACADEMY BRINGING 50 INNER-CITY STUDENTS TO K-STATE AT SALINA TO EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF FLIGHT: Fifty high school students from inner-city neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., are coming to Kansas State University at Salina to learn firsthand about the power of flight.

TOPEKA COMPANY TO BUILD NEW K-STATE PARKING GARAGE: Murray and Sons Construction Company Inc., Topeka, has been selected to build Kansas State University's new parking garage.

ACCIDENT INJURES WORKER AT JARDINE CONSTRUCTION SITE: A worker was injured this morning in an accident at the Jardine Apartment Complex construction site at Kansas State University.

K-STATE OPENS DOORS TO CAREERS FOR KAUFFMAN SCHOLARS: This summer, faculty, staff and students at Kansas State University are doing their share to keep a group of Kansas City area kids on track to successful college careers.

K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN STUDENTS TO LIVE, STUDY IN DOWNTOWN KC: Starting in August, the new home for the Kansas City Design Center will be the new workplace for seven students from Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

K-STATE POLITICAL SCIENCE GRADS USING THEIR SKILLS IN FOREIGN SERVICE: Two Kansas State University graduates are using knowledge they picked up in Kansas to make a difference in Africa. Lt. Col. Nicolas J. Lovelace and Maj. Matt Battiston are both career Army officers. Lovelace is U.S. Army defense attaché with the U.S. Embassy in N'Djamena, Chad. Battiston is U.S. Army attaché and C-12 pilot based in Accra, Ghana.

K-STATE MCNAIR SCHOLARS TO PRESENT RESULTS OF SUMMER RESEARCH: Their topics range from expatriate Indian fiction to oxygen uptake in athletes, but the undergraduates participating in this summer's McNair Scholars program at Kansas State University all have learned the same thing: how to apply the tools of research.

K-STATE PROFESSOR HELPS FIND A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO CHEMICALS FOR INSECT CONTROL: Stored-product pests are millers' worst nightmares. But one Kansas State University researcher is working to show there are ways to get rid of these pests without harming the environment or the budget.

K-STATE FRESHMAN TO RECEIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: John Grice, Manhattan, an incoming freshman at Kansas State University, has been awarded the John Foster Memorial Scholarship.

RECENT K-STATE GRADUATE NAMED MATT KING NAMED A FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR AND WILL STUDY AT OXFORD: Kansas State University's Matthew King will be heading to the United Kingdom this fall as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received a Fulbright Postgraduate Award and will work on a master's in environmental change and management at Oxford University.

K-STATE STUDENT ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: A team from Kansas State University's student chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers took first place in a recent international design competition sponsored by the society.

TRUMAN FOUNDATION HONORS K-STATE FACULTY MEMBER AND TRUMAN SCHOLAR: Nearly 20 years after a Harry S. Truman Scholarship changed her life, Kansas State University's Mary Hale Tolar is being recognized by the Truman Foundation for helping other Truman scholars and for living up to the scholarship's ideals.

KAW VALLEY RODEO TO SUPPORT K-STATE CANCER RESEARCH: Cowboys are tough enough to wear pink. Are you? The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University hopes so. It may not be a color associated with rodeos or K-State, but cowboys and cowgirls competing in the 2007 Kaw Valley PRCA Rodeo plan to wear pink at the rodeo, Friday, July 27, to raise awareness of breast cancer.

TWO NEW DEPARTMENT HEADS FOR K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN: Lorraine Cutler is now head of the department of interior architecture and product design. Peter Magyar will become head of the department of architecture effective Aug. 13.

FOR ANDALE FAMILY, K-STATE IS LIKE A SECOND HOME: The "K-State parent" sticker over the McFaddens' front door tells the truth, but not the whole truth. For that, they'd need a lot more stickers. Phyllis and Jim McFadden, Andale, have watched seven of their eight children head off to Kansas State University, starting with Sarah, who graduated in 1992. The chain will end with Monica, their youngest, who will start this fall.

GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN EXPERTS TO GATHER AT K-STATE: The challenge of moving goods from manufacturers to customers all over the world is drawing supply chain experts to Kansas State University for a conference this week.

K-STATE COMBATIVES PROGRAM TO TRAIN FORT RILEY SOLDIERS: More than 30 Iraq-bound female soldiers from the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade will take advantage of free self-defense instruction from Kansas State University's recently expanded combatives program.

K-STATE VETERINARIAN HAS TIPS FOR OWNERS OF THUNDERSTORM-PHOBIC DOGS: It's not just people, such as young children, who may find thunderstorms an anxiety-raising experience. Some dogs also are afraid of thunderstorms, according to a Kansas State University veterinarian.

K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE DEDICATES NEW FACILITY FOR TICK CONTROL RESEARCH: K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine recently dedicated its new Dryden-Merial Tick Research Center. The center was made possible through an $815,000 sponsorship from the Merial pharmaceutical corporation.

But a film can remain too true to its source, according to Philip Nel, an associate professor of English who has studied the Harry Potter phenomenon.
