K-STATE TO HOST ACT/SAT TEST PREPARATION WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

MANHATTAN -- High school girls from across Kansas will participate in "Ace the ACT/Slam the SAT" workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Kansas State University.

The event is sponsored by K-State's EXCITE! -- EXploring sCIence, Technology and Engineering -- program. EXCITE! is offered through the university's Women in Engineering and Science Program, designed to encourage high school girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields and prepare for college.

With coaching help from K-State female science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors, participants will learn the secrets of preparing for and taking the ACT and SAT. The 30-minute workshop sessions include Test-Taking Strategies; Games To Help You Succeed; Practice, Practice, Practice; SAT … ACT … or Both; and Retaking the Exams. Staff from Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a worldwide ACT/SAT prep organization, will conduct one of the afternoon sessions.

"We are very excited to be offering this workshop to help young women feel confident and ready for these important tests," said Susan Arnold Christian, K-State Women in Engineering and Science outreach program coordinator. "The interactive sessions, the small-group lunches led by K-State science, technology, engineering and mathematics mentors and take-home packets of information will provide these young women the necessary tools to boost their college preparation experience."

Participants will be attending from Alta Vista, Chapman, Eureka, Junction City, Lindsborg, Linwood, Manhattan, Ogden, Salina, Shawnee, St. Marys, Wakefield and Wichita.
