K-STATE AT SALINA TO HOST CAREER DAY FOR TEEN GIRLS TO EXPLORE SCIENCE, TECHNICAL PROFESSIONS

SALINA -- The 15th annual Teen Women in Science and Technology -- or TWIST -- Career Day will be Thursday, Jan. 10, at Kansas State University at Salina.

The career day is for encouraging teen girls to consider careers in traditionally male-dominated fields, including medicine, engineering, chemistry, aviation, wildlife biology and technology.

Professionals from the Salina area will share their career experiences with the attendees, giving them an opportunity to learn more about scientific and technical fields.

"This is a great opportunity for high school females to connect with professional women in our community," said Dixie Schierlman, TWIST organizer and associate dean for college advancement at K-State at Salina. "Hearing the success stories of professional women is a great motivator for young women to explore career opportunities."

The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Johnson, executive vice president and chief information officer for Sunflower Bank. Johnson earned an associate's degree in data processing technology at K-State at Salina and was the school's 2007 Alumni Fellow.

Schools participating in TWIST include: Bennington High School; Valley Heights High School, Blue Rapids; Chapman High School; Ellsworth High School; Southeast of Saline High School, Gypsum; Herington High School; Junction City High School; Lincoln High School; Marysville High School; Minneapolis High School; Sacred Heart High School, Salina; Salina Central High School, Salina South High School; Tescott High School; and Wilson High School.
