NUTRIJOY AND COCA COLA SIGN PURCHASE AGREEMENT: The Coca-Cola Company has signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire a majority ownership of NutriJoy Inc. The agreement was announced today by Bob Krause, chairman of NutriJoy Inc. and vice president for institutional advancement at Kansas State University.

K-STATE PHYSICS PROFESSOR AND COLLABORATOR USE MUSICAL CHORDS TO ANALYZE AND ILLUSTRATE HYDROGEN MOLECULE'S RESPONSE TO LASER PULSES: Uwe Thumm and colleagues in Heidelberg, Germany, have shown how a hydrogen molecule responds to laser pulses by using the changing musical chord created by the molecule's vibrational motion.

ROSTER OF K-STATE EVENTS PROMOTES NONVIOLENCE THROUGHOUT COMMUNITY: Kansas State University's seventh annual Season for Nonviolence includes a roadside cleanup campaign and workshops on compassionate communication, soldiers' rights and healthful eating habits.

K-STATE STUDENTS WORK TOWARD KEY LICENSING REQUIREMENT FOR NUCLEAR REACTOR OPERATION: Having a nuclear reactor on campus for education and research purposes means engineering students at Kansas State University not only get to study how an actual reactor works, they also can get the necessary training to become licensed nuclear reactor operators.

K-STATE AWARDS SEMESTER, GRADUATION HONORS: More than 1,700 students earned semester honors from Kansas State University for their academic performance during the 2007 fall semester. K-State also is awarding 129 students December 2007 graduation honors in recognition of their outstanding academic performance as undergraduates.

K-STATER'S BOOK ON RUSSIAN MILITARY NAMED A TOP ACADEMIC TITLE FOR 2007: The latest book by Dale Herspring, university distinguished professor of political science at Kansas State University, has been recognized as an outstanding academic title by Choice magazine, whose reviews influence scholars and libraries across the country.

K-STATE'S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE WINS MARKETING AWARD: The Advanced Manufacturing Institute at Kansas State University has been honored by the American Advertising Federation with a gold Addy award for best direct mail campaign.

K-STATE THEATER TO PRESENT FIRST PRODUCTION OF 2008: The theater program at Kansas State University will present "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7-9 and Feb. 13-16 in Nichols Theater.

BILL MARLER DONATES TO INTERNATIONAL FOOD SAFETY NETWORK: Fifteen years ago this week, Seattle lawyer Bill Marler and Kansas State University professor Douglas Powell were drawn into the food safety arena when the Washington Department of Health announced that Jack in the Box restaurants were the source of a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections. Now, the two are teaming up to further promote awareness of food safety.

K-STATE PROFESSORS PARTICIPATE IN WORK AT CERN, THE EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND: Two Kansas State University physics professors have worked for the past seven years helping bring to life the world's most powerful particle accelerator, known as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. K-State is one of 48 institutions from 22 states and Puerto Rico involved in this project. Approximately 2,300 international collaborators are working on the project.

K-STATE IMPLEMENTS EMERGENCY TEXT-MESSAGING SYSTEM: Kansas State University has introduced a text-messaging system to alert students, faculty and staff of campus emergencies. The voluntary service, which lets qualified users register their cell phone numbers via the university's existing eProfile information system, became available Jan. 18.

K-STATE TO ESTABLISH COOPERATIVE EXTENSION AT FORT RILEY: Kansas State University and Fort Riley will strengthen their commitments to assisting soldiers and their families by creating a Cooperative Extension program tailored to the needs of military personnel.

CANADIAN ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT EXPERT MAUREEN REED TO BE K-STATE ADVANCE DISTINGUISHED LECTURER: A Canadian environmental management expert will present an ADVANCE Distinguished Lecture at Kansas State University.

KEVIN LEASE TO SERVE AS PART-TIME INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN OF THE K-STATE GRADUATE SCHOOL: A Kansas State University faculty member who served as director of his department's graduate program is now serving as part-time interim associate dean of the K-State Graduate School.

K-STATE'S MCCAIN PERFORMANCE SERIES TO PRESENT 'GISELLE': Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series will kick off 2008 with a taste of Russia. The ballet "Giselle," performed by Russia's St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in McCain Auditorium.

K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN OFFERING EXHIBIT OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY KNOLL FURNITURE: "Knoll," an exhibit of classic and contemporary furniture, is on display through Friday, Feb. 8 in the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design's Chang Gallery in Seaton Hall.

K-STATE FACULTY GRANTED SABBATICAL LEAVE FOR 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR: Sabbatical leaves are being granted to 43 Kansas State University faculty members during the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose and length of each leave varies, with some faculty members using the time for research projects in the United States or internationally, to teach at other institutions or for other academic pursuits.

COLLABORATIVE BIOSECURITY RESEARCH INITIATIVE LAUNCHED TO TARGET ANIMAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH THREATS NATIONALLY: The Kansas Bioscience Authority has launched a $2.5 million initiative to bring together researchers nationwide to create products that protect Americans from the intentional use of animal-borne diseases to disrupt the national economy or to infect humans.

KANSAS BIOSCIENCE AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES $2.5 MILLION INITIATIVE TO BRING RESEARCHERS FROM ACROSS THE NATION TO K-STATE: The Kansas Bioscience Authority announced today a $2.5 million initiative that will add more horsepower to Kansas State University's research capabilities in addressing threats to the nation's food supply.

BUSINESSES TO SEEK EMPLOYEES, INTERNS AT K-STATE AGRI-INDUSTRY CAREER FAIR JAN. 29: Representatives from more than 65 businesses, including Frito-Lay, Safeway, Syngenta and Archer Daniels Midland, are coming to Kansas State University to talk with students in K-State's College of Agriculture about employment and internship opportunities.

K-STATE'S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE ASSISTS JOHN DEERE IN DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIAL PIN JOINTS: John Deere identified a need to extend pin joint life, make pin joint life consistent and eliminate pin joint greasing, all while working in varying operating conditions and applications.

K-STATE'S POLLUTION PREVENTION INTERN PROGRAM IS HELPING TO REDUCE WASTE, SAVE DOLLARS FOR KANSAS BUSINESSES: The Kansas State University Pollution Prevention Institute Intern Program has seven positions available for summer 2008. Now in its third year, the program links top-level engineering and environmental sciences students with Kansas business and industry to research projects that reduce industrial emissions and wastes and conserve natural resources.

K-STATE STUDENT'S INTEREST IN ENDING POVERTY TAKES HIM TO ELITE SUMMIT: Kansas State University's David Westfall, graduate student in sociology, Arcadia, recently joined more than 120 student activists from across the U.S. at a special summit on ending poverty, the ONE Power 100 Summit, Jan. 2-5, in Washington, D.C.

K-STATE AT SALINA TO BE HOST TO REGIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION: Kansas State University at Salina will host a Regional Kansas Science Olympiad Wednesday, Jan. 16. The Kansas Science Olympiad is a statewide competition that challenges students to demonstrate their knowledge, ability and skills in all areas of science.

K-STATE'S MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. OBSERVANCE WEEK JAN. 20-26: Lectures, entertainment and a fund drive to build a memorial to the late Coretta Scott King are some of the events organized as part of Kansas State University's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Week. The week, Jan. 20-26, is a celebration of the civil rights leader's legacy.

NEW BIG 12 ENGINEERING CONSORTIUM ADOPTS K-STATE'S COURSE ENROLLMENT SYSTEM: ExpanSIS, an award-winning, multi-university student information system co-developed by Kansas State University's Institute for Academic Alliances and office of mediated education, will be used by the newly-formed Big 12 Engineering Consortium to exchange student, course and financial information among Big 12 universities participating in the Big 12 Nuclear Engineering Program.

K-STATE WINS BEST PAPER AWARDS AT GRADUATE HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM RESEARCH CONFERENCE FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR: Several graduate students and faculty members from Kansas State University are recipients of best paper awards from the 13th annual Graduate Education and Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism. This year's conference was Jan. 3-5 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

STRANGE-BEHAVING CRYSTALS COULD HAVE IMPACT ON RESEARCH, TECHNOLOGY, SAYS K-STATE CHEMIST AND CO-AUTHOR OF ARTICLE IN JAN. 4 ISSUE OF SCIENCE: All of us break the rules from time to time -- even crystals. "There are all sorts of rules about what crystals can do during phase transitions," said Mark D. Hollingsworth, associate professor of chemistry at Kansas State University. "For a long time, scientists have assumed that the norm applied for all sorts of substances."
