K-STATE AT SALINA PROFESSOR TO SPEAK AT FIRST WORLD UNIVERSITIES FORUM

SALINA -- Kansas State University at Salina's Les Hannah will be a presenter at the first World Universities Forum, Jan. 30-Feb. 2, in Davos, Switzerland.

Hannah, an assistant professor of arts, sciences and business, will discuss the importance of general education with his presentation, "Cultivating Common Ground: The Value of a University Education to a Diverse World." His address will look at the importance of education to a diverse world by using audience participation and American Indian folklore.

At K-State at Salina, Hannah primarily teaches English and American Indian studies.

It's the second major international presentation for Hannah in the last seven months. In July 2007, he was invited to participate in an Oxford University Round Table on American Indians and their role in literature. A fellow member of the round-table group proposed Hannah speak at the World Universities Forum, and Hannah accepted the invitation.

The inaugural forum is being held in conjunction with the World Economic Forum, and will explore the role and future of universities in the world. The program includes presentations from international university leaders, as well as paper, colloquium and workshop presentations.

"It is a great idea; the two things that make the world go around in the same place at the same time -- money and knowledge," Hannah said.

"In order to live in a diverse world, we need to educate ourselves. My message to the economic leaders at this forum will be that economic resources are necessary to make that education possible," he said.
