STEAM
LEAK PROMPTS TEMPORARY SHUTTING OFF OF STEAM HEAT TO K-STATE CAMPUS
MANHATTAN
-- A steam leak that blew some asbestos off a pipe at the Kansas
State University Power Plant this morning has prompted the shutting
off steam pipe service to the campus from 1-3 p.m. this afternoon.
No
one was injured by the leak and the power plant was evacuated.
According
to Ed Heptig, director of maintenance for K-State's Division of
Facilities, steam service to the campus was turned off so workers,
in protective suits, can cover the exposed area on the pipe.
Lab
classes in King, Ackert and Chalmers halls and the Chemistry/Biochemistry
Building have been canceled because of the lack of heat. Labs in
the buildings have fume heads which require outside air to provide
ventilation.
