K-STATE PRESIDENT JON WEFALD COMMENTS ON GOVERNOR'S DEFERRED MAINTENANCE FUNDING PLAN

K-STATE AWARDS SEMESTER, GRADUATION HONORS: More than 1,800 students earned semester honors from Kansas State University for their academic performance during the 2006 fall semester. K-State also is awarding 114 students December 2006 graduation honors in recognition of their outstanding academic performance as undergraduates.

K-STATE AWARDS KASSEBAUM SCHOLARSHIPS TO EIGHT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: The scholarship competition was Jan. 17. K-State received 115 applications, and a selection committee chose 16 finalists to interview. Of those interviewed, eight students were chosen to receive scholarships.

K-STATE'S MCCAIN PERFORMANCE SERIES PRESENTS GRAMMY-NOMINATED VANGUARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA AND 'THE BARBER OF SEVILLE': Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series will present the Grammy-nominated Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, and "The Barber of Seville" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, both in McCain Auditorium.

STUDY BY K-STATE PROFESSOR SHOWS ROMANTIC FILMS NOT JUST FOR WOMEN: "Chick flicks" aren't just for women. According to research by Richard Harris, professor of psychology at Kansas State University, guys like romantic movies, too.

EMPLOYERS COMING TO K-STATE TO INTERVIEW ENGINEERING STUDENTS FOR JOBS, INTERNSHIPS AND CO-OP OPPORTUNITIES: The Engineering Career Fair will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the atriums of the K-State engineering complex. The fair is bringing to campus 118 firms -- 30 percent more than last year -- in engineering and technical fields.

FINNISH ARCHITECT TO DISCUSS SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE IN LECTURE FOR K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN: Finnish architect Mikko Heikkinen will present the slide illustrated lecture "Shades of Green: Case Studies on Sustainability in Architecture" at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the Little Theatre at the K-State Student Union. The lecture is open to the public.

K-STATE SIGNS MORE 2+2 AGREEMENTS WITH BARTON COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Officials from Kansas State University and Barton County Community College recently signed three new 2 + 2 agreements which will allow students to earn an associate degree from the community college and transfer credits to K-State to complete a bachelor's degree.

K-STATE CONTINUES ENROLLMENT FOR DREAMWEAVER AND WEB DESIGN DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE: The Division of Continuing Education at Kansas State University is continuing enrollment for the 3-credit online course "Topics in Dreamweaver and Web Design," EDCI 786, which is open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

CAROL MARTIN WATTS NAMED ACTING ASSOCIATE HEAD OF K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE: Carol Martin Watts, professor of architecture at Kansas State University, has accepted the position of acting associate head of the department of architecture at K-State's College of Architecture, Planning and Design. Watts is serving an 18-month term.

NEW K-STATE PROGRAMMING COMING TO CHANNEL 8; INAUGURAL PROGRAM SERIES "SHOW K-STATE" WILL FEATURE PERFORMING ARTS ON CAMPUS: Performing artists like jazz musicians, dancers and others involved in the arts at Kansas State University will find new audiences beyond the campus in programming coming to KST8, Cox Cable channel 8, operated by K-State's Kansas Regents Educational Communications Center.

K-STATE'S DAN THOMSON RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD FROM KANSAS VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION: The Kansas Veterinary Medical Association has presented the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Dan Thomson, assistant professor of clinical sciences at K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine.

THREE K-STATE STUDENTS NAMED AGRICULTURE STUDENTS OF THE MONTH: Three Kansas State University students have earned Student of the Month honors from the College of Agriculture. Criteria for the award include honors that the student has received, a one-page resume, activities, grade point average and a short essay.

STEAM LEAK PROMPTS TEMPORARY SHUTTING OFF OF STEAM HEAT TO K-STATE CAMPUS: A steam leak that blew some asbestos off a pipe at the Kansas State University Power Plant this morning has prompted the shutting off steam pipe service to the campus from 1-3 p.m. this afternoon.

K-STATE CELEBRATING A SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE WITH FILMS, ACTIVITIES CENTERED ON ACHIEVING PEACE AND JUSTICE: The Season for Nonviolence is an international observance of the 64 days between Jan. 30 and April 4, marking the time between the anniversaries of the assassinations of peacemakers Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

NICKELS A MEMBER OF FIRST COMBATIVES CLASS AT K-STATE: Christene Nickels, a Kansas State University freshman from Viola, was a member of the first military combatives class offered at the university. Her instructor says she was a model student.

K-STATE'S STUDENT HEALTH CENTER EXPANDS ITS SERVICES WITH ASTHMA CLINIC: K-State's Lafene Health Center added a special asthma clinic in fall 2006. The center's allergy and immunization clinic had served students with asthma, but the new specialized clinic focuses on the condition, helping to meet a need on campus, said Lannie Zweimiller, director of the health center.

K-STATE'S KONZA PRAIRIE EDUCATION PROGRAM SEEKS DOCENTS: Individuals interested in the Konza Prairie and who would like to learn more about it are invited to attend the next round of training sessions to become a Konza Prairie docent. Docent training will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Hulbert Center, the Konza Prairie headquarters.

FUTURE CITY REGIONAL COMPETITION COMES TO K-STATE: Nearly 60 teams of seventh- and eighth-grade students from across Kansas will participate in a regional Future City competition Saturday, Jan. 20, at Kansas State University. K-State is one of 38 regional sites nationwide in the competition.

K-STATE PRESIDENT JON WEFALD CALLS GOVERNOR'S BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS EXTRAORDINARILY POSITIVE: Kansas State University President Jon Wefald today called Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' budget recommendations "terrific" for K-State and the other regents universities. There were no budget cuts at K-State of any kind -- for the main campus, veterinary medicine, the Salina campus or K-State Research and Extension.

K-STATE PROFESSOR'S GRANT HELPS STUDENTS WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT BENEFITING SEVERAL KANSAS COMMUNITIES: A community service learning project has helped public relations students at Kansas State University gain some real-life experience in their field and provide useful materials to educate the public on water-related issues across Kansas.

FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, K-STATE STUDENT RECEIVES BEST PAPER AWARD AT HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM CONFERENCE: Amelia Estepa Asperin, a doctoral candidate in human ecology-institution management, won one of two best paper distinctions at the 12th annual conference, Jan. 4-6, at the University of Houston.

K-STATE'S LANDON LECTURE SERIES TO KICK OFF 2007 WITH PRESENTATION BY PRINCE TURKI AL-FAISAL, OUTGOING SAUDI AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.: The outgoing Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, will present the first Landon Lecture of 2007 at Kansas State University. Prince Turki's lecture will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in K-State's McCain Auditorium.

K-STATE RESEARCH SHOWS CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS NOT ALWAYS BENEFICIAL FOR POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN: A study by a Kansas State University researcher shows that calcium supplementation doesn't always lead to stronger bones in postmenopausal women. However, Mark Haub, associate professor of human nutrition, said he still thinks it's important for women of all ages to make sure they are getting enough calcium.

FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH IN AGING ADULTS VITAL, K-STATE EXPERT SAYS: For aging adults, maintaining physical health is extremely important to preserving quality of life. What older adults may not realize, however, is that mental health is equally vital for successful aging, said Janice Dinkel, coordinator of the social work program at Kansas State University.

K-STATE KINESIOLOGY PROFESSOR SAYS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TREND COULD BENEFIT AGING ADULTS: An increased trend in physical activity in this nation could lead to better health for members of the aging baby boomer generation, according to Melissa Bopp, assistant professor of kinesiology at Kansas State University.
