STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN AMERICAN HUMANICS MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
MANHATTAN
-- Several Kansas State University students participated in
the 2007 American Humanics Management Institute, Jan. 3-6, in Washington,
D.C.
American
Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit
organizations that prepares and certifies college students for professional
careers with nonprofit organizations. American Humanics is affiliated
with 75 colleges and universities nationwide, including K-State,
and it partners with more than 50 national nonprofit organizations
including the YMCA, the March of Dimes and the American Red Cross.
At K-State, American Humanics is part of leadership studies and
programs.
The
purpose of the annual institute is to expose junior and senior students
to experiences they will encounter as youth and human service agency
professionals. The institute, held annually during the first week
of January, is an opportunity for participants to network and take
part in simulated case studies and a national collegiate dialogue.
They also attend workshops conducted by experts in nonprofit leadership.
The institute is considered the capstone professional development
experience for students enrolled in the American Humanics nonprofit
leadership program.
Keynote
speakers included David Eisner, chief executive officer of the Corporation
for National and Community Service; Diana Aviv, president and chief
executive officer of the Independent Sector; and Ralph Smith, executive
vice president of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
More
than 580 American Humanics students and faculty, as well as more
than 300 nonprofit and corporate leaders, took part in this year's
institute. K-State's participants included Olivia Collins, director
of the university's American Humanics program, and Patrick Simpson,
a Volunteer in Service to America participant with K-State's civic
leadership program. Both Collins and Simpson were presenters at
the institute.
