K-STATE'S
BEACH MUSEUM OF ART OFFERING TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO WANT TO
TAKE ART INTO MANHATTAN AREA SCHOOLS
MANHATTAN
-- The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University
and the Junior League of the Flint Hills are now making it possible
to bring more art into the classroom by offering a Picture Person
Program Workshop from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the museum.
The
art appreciation program uses volunteer presenters to discuss works
of art and artists with students at local schools. Manhattan's Picture
Person Program was started by art lovers and members of the Junior
League of the Flint Hills. Several schools still have a Picture
Person Program through their parent-teacher organizations, but it
is the goal of the Junior League and the Beach Museum of Art to
revitalize the program and make it a more prominent fixture in Manhattan
area schools, according to Kathrine Schlageck, education and public
service supervisor at the Beach Museum.
"We
want to be sure that the arts remain a vital part of our children's
education," Schlageck said. "By working to bring the Picture
Person Program back front and center, it is our hope that art in
schools will always remain a priority."
The
Picture Person Workshop will provide volunteers with the knowledge
and information they need to stimulate and educate children about
art. Topics include art vocabulary, the process of reading a painting,
where to find art resources, ideas for integrating art with math,
science, social studies and language arts, as well as ideas for
involving children in art activities and projects. Participants
will receive a guide to talking about art with children and a listing
of resources available at the Beach Museum of Art's Teachers' Resource
Center and an ARTSmart poster set and curriculum from the museum.
Refreshments
will be provided at the workshop.
For
more information, call Kathrine Schlageck at 785-532-7718 or send
e-mail to klwalk@k-state.edu.
The
Beach Museum of Art is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus
at 14th Street and Anderson Avenue. Admission is free, and complimentary
visitor parking is available adjacent to the facility. Museum hours
are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays
and Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays.
