Getting the message: Military experts visit university to discuss strategic communication

Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013

MANHATTAN -- Two military experts will speak from experience when they discuss the importance of strategic communication in a presentation at Kansas State University.

Steve Boylan, a retired U.S. Army colonel, and Traci Scott, regional liaison officer for the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, will present "Strategic Communication During Conflict and Crisis" at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library. Students, faculty, military partners, community members and media are invited to this event.

Boylan, an assistant professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, served as the chief military spokesperson for Gen. David Petraeus in Iraq. Scott previously served on the secretary of defense's legislative staff and is a 2008 recipient of the Civilian War on Terror medal.

The two experts will discuss the utility and practice of strategic communication in the context of conflict and crisis, using the Iraq battleground as a test case. They will use a chronology of their time spent there to explain their communication strategies and methods.

K-State Libraries and the office of military affairs are sponsoring the event. Daryl Youngman, associate professor at K-State Libraries, said the lecture is an opportunity to become familiar with a different style of communication.

"Men and women in the military know communication becomes even more vital in times of crisis," Youngman said. "This is a chance for the military community, along with civilians, to hear expert advice on relaying a clear, concise message when it is most important."

Contact Youngman at 785-532-7409 or dyou@k-state.edu for more information on the lecture.
