K-STATE'S GROW PROGRAM TO HOST 'EVERYTHING IN THE SMALL ROOM' FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

MANHATTAN -- Scientists and engineers are involved in the design and production of products we use daily, as well as the buildings we live, work and play in. To demonstrate this to young women, the GROW, or Girls Researching Our World, program at Kansas State University will host a workshop exploring this phenomenon for the smallest room in the house -- the bathroom.

"Everything in the Small Room" will be 9 a.m. to 4p.m. Saturday, March 8, at K-State. Sessions will focus on the involvement of scientists and engineers in everything used in the bathroom, from makeup to toilet design.

The workshop is open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls. With K-State students as chaperones, participants will be put into small groups to perform hands-on activities. Projects planned include taking apart a hair dryer, making lip gloss and designing a "green" bathroom.

GROW is offered through K-State's Women in Engineering and Science Program and engages middle school girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities.

Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 29, or until the event is full. Cost is $10 and includes all supplies and lunch. Teachers and parents are invited to attend to observe the activities, which will take place at various locations on the K-State campus. An adult lunch is $5.
