K-STATE GROUP HOSTS PERFORMANCE OF MUSIC CELEBRATING LIVES OF SIGNIFICANT LATINA WOMEN

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's Ordinary Women will present "Tres Vidas" by the Core Ensemble from 8-10 p.m. Monday, March 3, in the K-State Student Union's Forum Hall.

The performance is free and open to the public.

"Tres Vidas" celebrates the life, times and work of three significant Latina women: painter Frida Kahlo, Mexico; peasant activist Rufina Amaya, El Salvador; and poet Alfonsina Storni, Argentina. Storylines in the performance include Kahlo's relationship with painter Diego Rivera, Amaya's survival of the massacre at El Mozote and Storni's challenges as Argentina's first great feminist poet.

The Core Ensemble features Tahirah Whittington, cello; Hugh Hinton, piano; and Michael Parola, percussion. Featured actress is Georgina Corbo. The ensemble was formed in 1993 and has toured nationally and internationally, including stops in England, Russia, the Ukraine, Australia and the British Virgin Islands. The ensemble received the 2000 Eugene McDermott Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In "Tres Vidas," Corbo will portray each of the featured women. A native of Cuba, Corbo is a graduate of the acting program at the State University of New York-Purchase. She has appeared on television and film, as well as several on- and off-Broadway productions.

The musical score of "Tres Vidas" includes the singing of traditional Mexican folk songs; Argentinean popular and tango songs made famous by Mercedes Sosa and Carlos Gardel; and music by Astor Piazzolla, Orlando Garcia, Pablo Ortiz, Alice Gomez, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Michael DeMurga and Osvaldo Golijov.
