MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's David Procter, director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development and of the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy, will present the first lecture of the semester for K-State's Vernon Larson International Luncheon Lecture Series.
Procter's lecture, "Promoting Civil Dialogue Around the World," will be from 12:15-1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Holiday Inn, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue. A luncheon, starting at 11:45 a.m., will precede the lecture. Cost for the luncheon is $12. Reservations for the luncheon and the lecture need to be made with the office of international programs, 785-532-5990, by Friday, Feb. 8. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Procter joined K-State in 1987 as an assistant professor of speech communication. He served as head of the department of speech communication, theater and dance from 1993-2006 and was named K-State's outstanding department head in 2001. He became the director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development in 2006. His books include "Civic Communion: The Rhetoric of Community Building" and "Enacting Pop Culture: Rhetorical Transformations of Liberty Weekend 1986." Procter earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from K-State, and his doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The Vernon Larson International Luncheon Lecture Series was started in 1979 by Vernon C. Larson, then director of international agriculture programs at K-State. The series offers the K-State community a chance to hear presentations from faculty who have recently participated in extensive overseas activity or who are involved in major international activities.
