K-STATE AWARDS KASSEBAUM SCHOLARSHIPS TO NINE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University has awarded Kassebaum Scholarships to nine high school seniors from Kansas and Nebraska.

K-State received 181 applications for the annual competition, and a selection committee chose 17 finalists to interview. Of those, nine students were chosen to receive the $5,000 scholarships for promising freshmen.

Named in honor of Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, the former U.S. senator from Kansas, the scholarship recognizes students who have shown potential for success in a variety of areas, such as academics, leadership, community service, performing arts, research, political activity, forensics, debate and athletics.

Selected as K-State Kassebaum scholars were:

Cameron McGuire, Gardner-Edgerton High School, and Ariel Sinha, Shawnee Mission West High School, both of Gardner; Kathryn Unruh, Hays, Hays High School; Dylan Works, Iola, Iola High School; Katrene Bormann, Louisburg, Louisburg High School; Kelsey Ayers, Olathe, Olathe East High School; Frank Thompson, Salina, Salina South High School; and Mark Sowers, Spring Hill, Spring Hill High School.

From out of state: Alexis Kiel, Bellevue, Neb., Bellevue West High School.
