K-STATE STUDENTS NAMED NEXT GENERATION NONPROFIT LEADERS
MANHATTAN -- Two Kansas State University students have been named Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders by American Humanics as part of a 2-year-old initiative funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Molly Hamm, senior in English, Shawnee, and Anthony Carter, senior in social science, Colorado Springs, Colo., were selected by a national panel of university, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders. Each will receive $4,500 to help cover living and educational expenses while completing an internship with a nonprofit or philanthropic organization.
Carter currently is interning with the K-State Alumni Association, supervised by Amy Button Renz, association president and chief executive officer. Hamm will complete her internship with The People Speak program of the United Nations Foundation in Washington, D.C., this summer as part of the Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service at Georgetown University.
Established in 1948, American Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders for the nonprofit sector. It is based in Kansas City, Mo.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, in January 2007, created a $5 million grant to support the Next Generation program, which helps an ethnically diverse group of students complete the internship requirement for American Humanics certification in nonprofit leadership.
"In many professions, such as medicine, social work and teaching, faculty members and practitioners make a significant commitment to assuring that students gain meaningful clinical and internship experience," said Kala Stroup, president of American Humanics. "The nonprofit internship allows students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to the daily routine of a nonprofit professional."
K-State's American Humanics/nonprofit leadership focus in the leadership studies minor is the only such program in the state.
