K-STATE'S DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK INCLUDES FILM, COMEDIAN, WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: Kansas State University has planned several free events for the community to mark Disability Awareness Week March 2-8.

K-STATE'S SALLY BAILEY TO BE HONORED FOR HER WORK IN INCLUDING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN THE ARTS: Sally Bailey, an associate professor and director of graduate studies in theater and director of the drama therapy program at K-State, is receiving the 2007 Award for Distinguished Service in Arts and Disabilities from Accessible Arts Inc. and the Kansas State Board of Education.

K-STATE CENTER FOR ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARDS ENGAGEMENT INCENTIVE GRANTS: Curbing teen violence, providing HIV/AIDS education, developing rural leadership and promoting volunteerism are among the projects receiving the most recent Engagement Incentive Grants from Kansas State University's Center for Engagement and Community Development.

K-STATE AT SALINA TO OFFER HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRAINING: Kansas State University at Salina's department of continuing education will offer a Heavy Equipment Workshop April 22-24.

STUDENTS TO SHOWCASE K-STATE RESEARCH EFFORTS MARCH 7: The 13th annual Kansas State University Graduate Research Forum will be Friday, March 7, at the K-State Student Union. The forum, which is free and open to the public, is an opportunity for all to learn more about a diverse array of research currently being conducted at K-State.

KLATASKE SELECTED AS ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR: A Kansas State University graduate has been named the winner of a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for 2007. The award, just announced, provides Ryan Klataske, Manhattan, $23,000 to study abroad for one year.

K-STATE'S BLUE KEY SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY SPONSORING USPEAK FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS: Kansas State University's Blue Key, a senior leadership honor society, is giving high school juniors and seniors the chance to speak out on issues that concern them.

K-STATE VETERINARIAN OFFERS TIPS FOR CHOOSING A PET SITTER: A pet sitter can be an option when a pet owner must be away from home for work, vacation, emergency or other reasons and doesn't want to leave the pet in a boarding kennel.

K-STATE EVALUATING EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEMS: Kansas State University tested some of its emergency notification systems this morning and this afternoon is surveying faculty, staff and students about their impressions of the services.

K-STATE'S BLACK STUDENT UNION IS BEST IN THE BIG 12: Kansas State University's Black Student Union received the Clarence Wine Most Outstanding Big 12 Council of the Year award at the 31st annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government, Feb. 14-16, at Oklahoma State University.

K-STATE OBSERVING INTEGRITY WEEK MARCH 2-8: Kansas State University will observe Integrity Week March 2-8 with a variety of activities that highlight the commitment of the university community to uphold high standards for academic integrity at K-State.

K-STATE PROFESSOR OF PARK MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION TO GIVE LARSON LECTURE: Kansas State University's Ted Cable, professor of park management and conservation, will present "The French Connection" as part of the Vernon Larson International Luncheon-Lecture Series.

K-STATE'S ZACHARY MAIER INVITED TO INTERVIEW FOR TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP: Zachary Maier, a Kansas State University senior in computer engineering with a minor in political science from Ottawa, has been invited to interview for a Truman scholarship.

K-STATE EXPERT SAYS FOOD SAFETY EFFORTS SHOULD LOOK BEYOND E. COLI 0157; ANOTHER E. COLI COULD BE THE NEXT BIG THREAT: T.G. Nagaraja is a professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology at K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine. He said that Shiga toxin, a protein secreted by the organism, is what makes E. coli 0157 dangerous to humans -- causing diarrhea and kidney failure -- even though E. coli 0157 is present in healthy cattle.

K-STATE AND WEST TEXAS A&M RESEARCHERS COLLABORATE TO FIND NEW VACCINE TECHNOLOGY DECREASES E. COLI IN BEEF CATTLE: Despite millions of dollars spent on food safety research over the last 10 years, ground beef recalls due to E. coli O157:H7 were higher in 2007 than in 2006, according to researchers from Kansas State University and West Texas A&M University. E. coli O157:H7 has been linked to foodborne illnesses in humans after consuming contaminated beef and produce.

K-STATE'S BRI RECEIVES $1.548 MILLION FOR ADVANCED VIDEO TECHNOLOGY; WILL ALSO BE THE FIRST IN NATION TO HOST NEW FEDERAL BIOSAFETY TRAINING: A $1.548 million investment from the Kansas Bioscience Authority and top-notch federal biosafety training are both coming to Kansas State University's BRI – Biosecurity Research Institute – this spring.

LIBRARY CAMP KANSAS MARCH 19 AT K-STATE'S HALE LIBRARY: Providing a special opportunity for library users and librarians from libraries of all types to share ideas, K-State Libraries at Kansas State University will be the host to Library Camp Kansas from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the Hemisphere Room at K-State's Hale Library.

K-STATE MBA STUDENTS GET FIRSTHAND LOOK AT CHINESE BUSINESS PRACTICES: Swinder Janda, a professor of marketing at K-State, led 11 graduate students through five different Chinese cities in a study abroad experience offered during the university's January 2008 intersession. The two-week trip was the first faculty-led study abroad trip designed specifically for graduate students in the K-State College of Business Administration.

K-STATE OPERA THEATER TO PRESENT COMEDIC OPERA 'TOO MANY SOPRANOS': The opera theater program at Kansas State University will present the comedic opera "Too Many Sopranos" at 7:30 p.m. March 5-8 and 2:30 p.m. March 9 in Nichols Theater.

K-STATE STUDENT FROM HOXIE RECEIVES $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP FROM NATIONAL ENGINEERING SOCIETY: A Kansas State University senior in architectural engineering has received a $10,000 scholarship from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

KANSAS WIND FOR SCHOOLS PROGRAM SEEKING PROPOSALS FROM RURAL SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN HAVING WIND TURBINE FOR EDUCATION, OUTREACH: It's an opportunity that schools in rural Kansas may not want to let blow by. The Kansas Wind for Schools program, which works with the Wind Applications Center at Kansas State University, is seeking proposals from elementary and secondary schools in rural parts of the state interested in having a small wind turbine for educational and outreach purposes.

K-STATE'S GROW PROGRAM TO HOST 'EVERYTHING IN THE SMALL ROOM' FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS: Scientists and engineers are involved in the design and production of products we use daily, as well as the buildings we live, work and play in. To demonstrate this to young women, the GROW, or Girls Researching Our World, program at Kansas State University will host a workshop exploring this phenomenon for the smallest room in the house -- the bathroom.

K-STATE REACTS TO NEWS OF WEISER'S NEW JOB: Officials at Kansas State University reacted with mixed emotions to news released today by Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe that he has hired K-State Athletic Director Tim Weiser to be his Deputy Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

K-STATE'S MCCAIN PERFORMANCE SERIES TO PRESENT 'CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF': It has been called one of the most successful plays ever and now "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" will be performed at Kansas State University's McCain Auditorium. The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at McCain Auditorium and is part of the McCain Performance Series.

RESEARCH HEADED BY K-STATE VETERINARIANS LEADING TO TOOLS FOR MANAGING BOVINE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMPLEX, A COSTLY AILMENT: Bovine respiratory disease complex has multiple causes. It's sometimes hard to classify and predict. It also costs the beef industry more than any other disease -- an estimated $690 million in 2006, according to one report.

OP--ED: NBAF'S LOCATION WILL HAVE REAL IMPLICATIONS FOR ANIMAL DISEASE, ECONOMY: As a practicing veterinarian for the last 35 years, I have had a host of encounters with animal disease, mostly concerning swine. From helping the Chilean government rid its country of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus to being one of the vets who is "boots first on the ground" dealing with animal disease outbreaks in Kansas, my experience is far--reaching.

FRED C. AND MARY R. KOCH FOUNDATION AND KOCH INDUSTRIES TO DONATE $400,000 TO SUPPORT DIVERSITY AT K-STATE: The Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation and Koch Industries Inc. have announced donations totaling $400,000 to the Kansas State University office of diversity to increase enrollment of multicultural students and help them succeed in college.

K-STATE NOMINATES FOUR STUDENTS FOR TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIPS: Kansas State University is nominating four students to compete for $30,000 Harry S. Truman scholarships. James Hohenbary, assistant dean for scholarship development, said the nominees are Daniel Kirksey, Kyle Malone, Zachary Maier and Katie Beye.

K-STATE EXPERT IN PIG DISEASE TRAVELS WITH DELEGATION OF DISEASE EXPERTS TO HELP CHINA DIAGNOSE WHAT AILS THE COUNTRY'S PIG HERD: Millions of Chinese pigs are dying of a newly emerging disease. With the assistance of a Kansas State University virologist and a team of specialists who recently visited the country, Chinese researchers are now a step closer to understanding the disease complex.

DUDE, WASH YOUR HANDS: K-STATE PROFESSOR EXPLAINS PROPER HAND WASHING: Proper hand washing with the proper tools -- soap, water and paper towels -- can significantly reduce the chance of getting some food-borne and other illnesses, according to Kansas State University's Doug Powell, associate professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology and scientific director of the International Food Safety Network.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON BEEF CATTLE WELFARE MAY 28-30 AT K-STATE: Animal welfare is one of the fastest growing concerns among consumers throughout the country, according to Dr. Dan Thomson, a Kansas State University veterinarian and expert on the impact of beef cattle production practices on cattle well-being and health.

K-STATE AWARDS KASSEBAUM SCHOLARSHIPS TO NINE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: Kansas State University has awarded Kassebaum Scholarships to nine high school seniors from Kansas and Nebraska.

K-STATE DANCE PROGRAM ADDS TAP DANCE ENSEMBLE: The dance program at Kansas State University has added a 12-member tap dance ensemble. The group of K-State tap dance students is available for performances on campus and in the community.

FLASH DRIVE STOLEN FROM AUDITING COMPANY MAY HAVE CONTAINED PERSONAL DATA: An employee of Berberich Trahan & Co., P.A., reported the theft of a laptop and a flash drive from his automobile. The flash drive may have contained unencrypted data relating to 23 Kansas State University current and former students.

K-STATE'S STUDENT GOVERNING ASSOCIATION WANTS TO GET STUDENTS INVOLVED: Kansas State University's Student Governing Association is sponsoring a weeklong event to encourage K-State students to get involved with student government through the upcoming elections.

K-STATE SENSORY ANALYSIS EXPERTS HELPING TO SET UP FIRST TRAINED SENSORY PANEL AT A THAILAND UNIVERSITY: With the help of Kansas State University experts Edgar Chambers IV and Delores Chambers, a university in Thailand is establishing that country's first sensory and consumer research center.

BASIS ARCHITECTURE FOUNDER TO PRESENT LECTURE AT K-STATE: Steve Lane, the founder and principal of BASIS Architecture in Colorado, will present a lecture for the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

K-STATE FACULTY MEMBERS EARN PROMOTION, TENURE: Kansas State University is promoting 28 faculty members to the rank of full professor and 43 faculty members to the rank of associate professor with tenure. In addition, four faculty have been granted tenure. The promotions in rank and the granting of tenure have been approved by Jon Wefald, K-State president. They go into effect July 1.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT K-STATE INCLUDES APPEARANCE BY JULIAN BOND: February is Black History Month across the country, and Kansas State University's Black Student Union has organized a full month of campus events, including a lecture by Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
