K-STATE WORKSHOP TEACHES STUDENTS BUSINESS DINING ETIQUETTE
MANHATTAN -- Knowing and using formal dining etiquette can be a good way to create a positive impression with a prospective employer when that job interview or meeting is conducted over a meal.
"Students need to learn how to present themselves in a variety of ways, including appropriate attire, conversation etiquette and how to avoid career-crushing table manners," said Mona Dexter, graduate assistant at Kansas State University's career and employment services.
K-State students wanting to learn or brush up on the finer points of dining etiquette can attend a dining etiquette workshop at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Derby Dining Center's Gold Room. The workshop is sponsored by career and employment services and the department of hotel, restaurant, institution management and dietetics.
"Many employers conduct interviews and meetings over meals. How you present yourself during a meal tells an employer a lot about you," said Dexter, who is organizing the event. "Adding salt to your food before tasting it may imply you have a presuming nature. Asking the server too many questions regarding the menu may show you are indecisive."
Reservations are required to attend the workshop and can be made by dropping by career and employment services in Holtz Hall or calling 785-532-6506. The reservation deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 26. The workshop costs $6.75, which includes the meal, and the fee must be paid when the reservation is made. Credit cards are accepted. Students on a K-State residence hall meal plan may use a meal exchange to attend the workshop.
Professional business attire also is requested to attend the workshop.
