BIG 12 CONFERENCE ON SPONSORED PROGRAMS AT K-STATE APRIL 2-4

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University will be the host to the annual Big 12 Conference on Sponsored Programs, April 2-4, at the K-State Alumni Center.

The 32nd annual conference is for university research administrators. Planners anticipate more than 140 research administrators from universities in the region to attend.

"As in year's past, the conference program is geared toward professional development for research administrators in higher education," said Paul Lowe, K-State assistant vice president for research and director of preaward services. "We will have concurrent work sessions for preaward and post-award issues and interests, and there also will be plenty of time for people to network and meet informally."

The conference is open to the public, but registration is required and can be done online at:

Keynote speakers are K-State's Nancy and Jerry Jaax, veterinarians known internationally for their roles in constraining an Ebola virus outbreak in the United States. Jerry Jaax serves as K-State research compliance officer. He and Ashley Rhodes, also of the research compliance office, will discuss proactive compliance programming.

Other speakers include:

* Charlie Griffin, research assistant professor of family studies and human services at K-State, who provided counseling and other relief services to residents of the Kansas community of Greensburg after the town was leveled by tornado in May 2007. Griffin will discuss responding to natural disasters.

* Mitch Holthus, voice of the Kansas City Chiefs since 1994, and formerly voice of the K-State Wildcats. Holthus, a K-State alum, has been selected Kansas Sportscaster of the Year seven times.

* Mike Smith, managing director in the higher education group at Huron, and a presenter at this conference since 1980. Smith's expertise is higher education financial management.

* David Kennedy, director of costing policies and studies at the Council on Governmental Relations.

The K-State planning committee for the conference includes Lowe; Anita Fahrny, assistant director of preaward services; Shannon Fisher, associate controller, and Roger McBride, assistant controller, both of the office of sponsored projects Accounting; and Michelle Parker, fiscal analyst with the controller's office. K-State's Division of Continuing Education is handling conference registration.
