K-STATE STUDENT BRINGS HOME STUDENT ADDY FOR BEST IN SHOW AT ADVERTISING COMPETITION

MANHATTAN -- Joel Jackson, Salina, senior in advertising at Kansas State University, is the winner of a Student ADDY for Best in Show at the Kansas City Advertising Club's recent ADDY Awards competition.

Jackson submitted a three-piece magazine campaign, "Educate," designed for the World Wildlife Fund. The campaign consisted of three advertisements: "Chalkboard," "Laptop" and "Markerboard." Jackson said he entered the contest looking for a bigger challenge and that he selected the "Educate" campaign because it had received high praise during portfolio critiques.

The competition included both business and student categories. The student contest was open to any student who wished to enter at the American Advertising Federation's Web site. Students then submitted their entries through the mail and waited to find out the results. Jackson said he was notified by e-mail that his work had received a Gold Award and had been nominated for Best in Show.

"It was surreal," Jackson said. "Being recognized for both means a lot to me, and I'm very thankful. I'm proud to represent K-State. The award also prompts me to work harder. I can't stop to celebrate and expect to stay ahead."

Jackson received the award at the Kansas City Advertising Club's ADDY gala in Kansas City, Mo. Student and advertising agency work were on display at the event, which was attended by more than 800 advertising professionals.

The next step for Jackson is the Ninth District ADDY competition. If he wins a Gold Award at the competition, his work would be forwarded to the National ADDY competition. The National ADDY Student Best of Show winner receives a $1,000 prize.

"According to my friends in the industry, winning is a huge deal," Jackson said. "The recognition stands out in a resume when interviewing for a summer internship and having a trophy is pretty awesome, too."

Jackson is a graduate of Salina South High School.
