EXHIBIT
AT K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN EXPLORES
USE OF TEXTILES IN ARCHITECTURE
MANHATTAN
-- The Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning
and Design is displaying an exhibit exploring textiles in architecture.
"Transforming
the Textiles in Architecture" will be on display through Friday,
March 9, at the Chang Gallery in Seaton Hall. The free gallery is
open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
The
display was organized by Shani Chambers, assistant professor of
architecture, and highlights work produced by artists, educators
and students. Chambers said that in recent years, there is a renewed
interest textiles in architecture. Be it through technology, structure,
materiality or expression, architects are discovering new relationships
and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration that enriches
the field, she said.
The
exhibit presents a semester of exploratory work by K-State students
in the architecture seminar course "Weaving + Architecture"
and fifth-year architecture design studio "Transforming the
Textiles in Architecture," both taught in fall 2006 by Chambers.
Through collaboration with students in apparel and textiles at K-State,
participation in workshops, case studies, theory and design process,
the students engaged, discovered and interpreted the relationship
between textiles and architecture, she said.
Chambers
said this effort would not have been realized without collaboration
by four artists who have, through their work and interests, shared
in this exploratory process. Their work is highlighted as part of
this exhibition. They include: Valerie Goodwin, quilter and assistant
professor at the School of Architecture at Florida A&M University;
Sherry Haar, artist and associate professor in the department of
apparel, textiles and interior design at K-State; and Hiromi Niide
and Rebecca Moscou, both fiber artists from Manhattan.
Participating
students include:

Greater Kansas City: Colette Hamilton, Chris Krumrei and Whang Suh,

from Kansas City, Mo.
