STUDENTS WIN 2007 KANSAS HR GAMES
MANHATTAN
-- Students from Kansas State University's chapter of the Society
for Human Resource Managers recently won the 2007 Kansas HR Games,
defeating both the University of Kansas and Wichita State University.
K-State
was host to the "Jeopardy!"-style competition, which was
in the K-State Student Union. Questions were divided into categories
similar to those used in the Professional of Human Resources certification
exam and covered topics such as management practices, selection
and recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits,
employee/labor relations, and health, safety and security.
"The
event is an opportunity to foster friendly competition and networking
opportunities among different universities," said Valerie Evans,
K-State instructor in management and faculty adviser to the Society
for Human Resource Managers.
"It
also provides a fun way to motivate and prepare students for Professional
of Human Resources certification, which is highly regarded among
the human resources profession. As students prepare to compete,
they are learning and reviewing knowledge needed to pass the exam,"
Evans said.
The
competition was sponsored by the Kansas Society for Human Resource
Managers State Council, Express Personnel Services in Manhattan
and Jim Hill and the Human Resource Management Network of Manhattan.
K-State
defeated both participating schools in the first rounds of the competition
and won the final round against Wichita State. Members of the K-State
team include Kathryn Blackburn, senior in management, Hutchinson;
Joshua Schumm, senior in management, Manhattan; and Emily Watts,
senior in management, Wamego.
As
the winner of the competition, the K-State team received $1,500
from the Kansas Society for Human Resource Mangers State Council.
The money will be used for transportation to the regional HR Games
and student conference March 23-24 in Tempe, Ariz.
