ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR'S WORK TO BE FEATURED ON HGTV
MANHATTAN
-- Work by Larry Bowne, assistant professor of architecture
at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and
Design, will be featured in two upcoming episodes of the show "Small
Space, Big Style" on cable's Home and Garden Television or
HGTV.
The
first episode, called "Flowing with Style," will premiere
at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. Bowne's project, a New York City
apartment full of hidden storage, is one of four spaces featured.
The apartment is owned by Iris Weinstein, a book designer with the
Knopf imprint at Random House. She bought the apartment by selling
one of a pair of Andy Warhol paintings she owns. She received the
art decades ago as a gift from the painter after doing an internship
at The Factory. She still owns the other painting.
The
design of the apartment transformed a small studio in a terra-cotta
masonry building formerly used as a printing house. The renovation
included sliding glass panels and a free-standing storage unit which
divided the narrow space into a sequence of rooms. The scope included
interiors and custom furnishings.
According
to the producer, the airdate for Bowne's second episode will be
announced soon.
Bowne
joined K-State's architecture faculty in the fall 2003. After earning
a bachelor's from the University of California at Los Angeles and
a master of architecture from Harvard, he served an internship in
Boston and New York City. Bowne opened a small partnership in New
York City in 1997. The firm, B&R Projects, prepared designs
for projects in New York City, the U.S. and abroad, including commissions
in Buenos Aires, Zurich and Kosovo. Since 2003, he has been principal
of Larry Bowne Architects, first in New York City and now in Manhattan.
His
design work has been published and exhibited in multiple venues,
including articles in "Interiors," "Dwell" and
the "Village Voice." His exhibitions include the Marianne
Boesky Gallery in New York City, Marvin Hall at the University of
Kansas and the Chang Gallery at K-State.
Bowne
also has worked with K-State students on several design-build projects,
including a renovation of K-State's Dickens Hall, a chicken coop
in Rose Hill and the House of Dance and Feathers in New Orleans.
The projects have received attention in various venues, including
an exhibition at the 10th Venice Biennale in fall 2006 and an upcoming
exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in spring
and summer 2007. They also have been featured on The Weather Channel,
National Public Radio and the ABC TV series, "Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition."
