K-STATE AT SALINA'S PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM ESSAY COMPETITION AND HOLIDAY EVENT DEC. 13

SALINA -- Kansas State University at Salina's Upward Bound program will have its fifth annual Presidential Classroom Essay Competition and Holiday Event at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, in the College Center Conference Room.

Fifty seniors from four area high schools will be competing for an all-expense paid trip to participate in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Conference Feb. 15-22, 2009, in Washington, D.C. In addition, the winner will receive a $100 scholarship from K-State at Salina for fall 2009.

K-State at Salina judges for the essay portion of the competition will be David Delker, associate dean of the college; Alysia Starkey, director of libraries and assistant professor; and Jennifer Molidor, professor of English.

The Presidential Classroom program provides today's outstanding high school students from the U.S. and abroad with rigorous educational experiences in Washington, D.C., that can help prepare them for roles as leaders in public service and private enterprise. Graduates of program gain refined leadership skills and a deeper understanding of politics, benefits that can enhance their educational and career aspirations. Presidential Classroom addresses current issues in science and technology, business, national security, law and justice, news media and international relations. At K-State at Salina, the Presidential Classroom Essay Competition is combined with Upward Bound's Holiday Event, which recognizes the commitment to the Upward Bound program by students and their parents.

Upward Bound is a campus-based TRIO program designed to assist high school students with college potential who need additional academic preparation, advisement and encouragement to succeed in high school and later in college. The students are involved in the program from the time they are selected for participation until they graduate from high school. The program offers a six-week summer residential component and Saturday sessions at K-State at Salina during the academic year. Students must meet governmental guidelines to qualify for the program.
