K-STATE FACULTY RECEIVE GRANTS TO LEAD INTERNATIONAL STUDY TRIPS TO EIGHT COUNTRIES

MANHATTAN -- Fifteen Kansas State University faculty members have received grants to lead international study trips for K-State students. The Study Abroad Incentive Grants were awarded by M. Duane Nellis, provost and senior vice president.

"I am delighted that my office can provide support for these faculty-led study abroad proposals," Nellis said. "At K-State we emphasize student opportunities for international experiences. These experiences will permit student study in eight countries across the globe, including two options in Africa, Great Britain, India, Eastern Europe, Costa Rica, Mexico, China and Indonesia. Participating faculty represent the colleges of
education, arts and sciences, and agriculture. This means that these international opportunities are extended to students in a wide range of majors.

"Just as undergraduate research is a high priority at K-State, so is the international experience," Nellis said. "We want every student to know these opportunities are available to them."

Funding of $42,000 was provided by the provost's office, as follows: Awards of $6,000 were presented for Agriculture - North India, to Sajid Alavi, associate professor, and Hulya Dogan, assistant professor, grain science and industry; Post-Communist Societies, to Laszlo Kulcsar, professor, and Nadezda Shapkina, assistant professor, sociology, anthropology and social work; Special Education in Tanzania, to Susan Dillinger, instructor, and Marilyn Kaff, associate professor, special education counseling; Law, Lit, and London, to Daralyn Arata, adviser, College of Arts and Sciences dean's office, Don Hedrick, professor of English, and John Fliter, associate professor of political science; ASI and FDSCI to Northern Mexico, to John Unruh, professor, and Christopher Reinhardt, assistant professor.

Awards of $3,000 were presented for Horticulture in Costa Rica, to Cathie Lavis, assistant professor, horticulture forestry and recreation resources; African Music and Dance to Julie L. Pentz, assistant professor, communication studies, theater and dance; Chinese Culture to Han Yu, assistant professor of English; and Bali, Lombok, and Wallacea, to Srini Kambhampati, professor of entomology.
