K-STATE STUDENTS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS HOMELAND SECURITY SCHOLARSHIPS

MANHATTAN -- Two Kansas State University students have received Career Development Awards from the Department of Homeland Security's National Center for Food Protection and Defense.

K-State winners are Kathryn Krusemark, a master's student in food science with an emphasis in food defense, originally from Atchison; and Julianne Jensby, a sophomore in food science and industry and pre-medicine, with a minor in leadership studies. She is originally from Beatrice, Neb.

"These are prestigious scholarships and recognize our students for their academic achievements," said Justin Kastner, assistant professor of food safety and security at K-State. These scholarships are for exceptional students pursuing degrees in homeland security and science, technology, engineering and mathematics related disciplines. Support is provided for educational expenses, including tuition, books, software, travel-related research and a monthly stipend."

Both Krusemark and Jensby are conducting interdisciplinary research through the Frontier Program, a joint Kansas State University-New Mexico State University program for the historical studies of border security, food
security, and trade policy.

Kastner is co-director of the Frontier program with Jason Ackleson, an associate professor at New Mexico State. Two students at New Mexico State also won the scholarships.

Krusemark is a graduate of Maur Hill-Mount Academy in Atchison, and is the daughter of Dan and Mary Ann Krusemark. Jensby is a graduate of Beatrice (Neb.) High School, and the daughter of Jeff and Lorraine Jensby.

Kastner said Homeland Security's National Center for Food Protection and Defense is working with Frontier to help facilitate its career development program.

In addition to the Homeland Security awardees, the Frontier program currently features eight other undergraduate and graduate students at Kansas State and New Mexico State, Kastner said.

"All Frontier students pursue what is termed a 'Frontier Interdisciplinary eXperience' -- abbreviated FIX; student FIX projects currently address public policy problems touching on import security, veterinary capacity, the history of the agricultural and food trade, models of cross-border cooperation, international trade policy, and the history of public health," he said.
