RECENT K-STATE GRADUATE RECEIVES MORTAR BOARD FELLOWSHIP
MANHATTAN -- A May 2008 graduate of Kansas State University has received Mortar Board's national GEICO Fellowship, a $5,000 award.
Danielle English, who graduated summa cum laude from K-State with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minors in Spanish and nonprofit leadership, was among 15 recipients of the fellowship from Mortar Board, the national college senior honor society. English, who is now working on a master's degree in public relations at the University of Denver, is the daughter of Paul and Sylvia English, Overland Park.
Mortar Board awarded more than $60,000 in fellowships this year. Fellowship recipients are chosen based on academic excellence, recommendation, promise, financial need and Mortar Board involvement.
English was selected to join K-State's chapter of Mortar Board in 2007. She served as the chapter's Academic Decathlon co-chair and as a member of the group's service committee.
"From the first meeting of Mortar Board, I could tell this organization would be different than any other I had joined," English said. "The atmosphere of working with other high-achieving students is incredible. Each person brings to the table special talents, great enthusiasm and strong dedication to helping the community and achieving goals we set for ourselves. Mortar Board allowed me the opportunity to hone these skills in a meaningful and productive way."
At K-State, English also was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies; Silver Key, the sophomore honorary; and K-State's Developing Scholars program. She studied abroad in Mexico and was a recipient of the NextGen Leader award from American Humanics.
"Danielle has proven to be quite an exceptional Mortar Board member," said Jon Cook, executive director of Mortar Board. "Throughout her undergraduate membership, Danielle epitomized the Mortar Board ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. I am so thrilled that with can recognize her accomplishments with a national Mortar Board fellowship."
Mortar Board members are selected for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from four founding chapters to 226 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly 250,000 initiated members across the nation. K-State's chapter was founded in 1928.
