K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF EDUCATION RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING STUDENTS AND PROMISING FUTURE TEACHERS

MANHATTAN -- Students with a bright future in the field of education were honored at commencement Dec. 13 for Kansas State University's College of Education.

Five students received the College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award, and two students received the College of Education Outstanding Future Teacher Awards.

Students receiving the awards were:

* Nichole Hanel, bachelor's graduate in elementary education, Fort Riley, Outstanding Future Teacher Award. Hanel is a graduate of Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, Calif., and is the daughter of Sheila Burgess, Fort Riley.

* Erin Schroeder, a cum laude bachelor's graduate in elementary education and modern languages, Hesston, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Schroeder was an active member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and volunteered for numerous philanthropic organizations, including the American Red Cross and CASA. She is a member of K-State's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, a Spanish language organization, and Kappa Delta Pi honor society. She also studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain. Schroeder is a 2004 graduate of Hesston High School and is the daughter of Del and DaLonna Schroeder, Hesston.

* Joshua Cowan, bachelor's graduate in secondary education, Olathe, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Cowen was a member of the Social Studies Education Club and belonged to Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, serving as sergeant of arms for two non-consecutive terms. He is a 2004 graduate of Olathe South High School and the son of Christopher and Melissa Cowan, Olathe.

* Ryan Jacobs, bachelor's graduate in secondary education, Olathe, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Jacobs was a member of the College of Education Council, Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society and the K-State Honor and Integrity System. He is the son of Jack and Trisha Jacobs, Olathe.

* Kelly Williams Jr., bachelor's graduate in secondary education, Seneca, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Williams was a member of the College of Education's Education Council and was a student member of the Teacher Education Advisory Council. He is a 2004 graduate of Nemaha Valley High School and is the son of Kelly Williams Sr., Agency, Mo., and Steve Boeding and Julie Williams, Seneca.

* Kirsten McManus, bachelor's graduate in music education, Topeka, College of Education Outstanding Future Teacher Award. McManus was drum major for two years for the K-State Marching Band and principal flutist with both the K-State Symphony Band and Orchestra. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a music fraternity for women. She was a member of the National Intercollegiate Band in 2007, and was a member of the 2008 Kansas Intercollegiate Band. She is a 2004 graduate of Topeka High School and is the daughter of Craig and Terri McManus, Topeka.

* Magan Harrell, a cum laude bachelor's graduate in elementary education, Fort Pierce, Fla., Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Harrell was selected to deliver the reflections address at the College of Education commencement ceremony. She was a College of Education Ambassador, and a member of Kappa Delta Phi and Pinnacle honor societies. She also served in various capacities, including as president, of the Kansas National Education Association's Student Program. Harrell is a 2003 graduate of Riverdale High School, Fort Myers, Fla., and is the daughter of Freeman and Zania Evans, Fort Myers, Fla.
