K-STATE STUDENTS HONORED FOR INNOVATIVE DESIGN AT 10TH ANNUAL BOWMAN DESIGN FORUM

MANHATTAN -- Five third-year architecture students from Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design were recognized for design excellence Dec. 10 at the 10th annual Bowman Design Forum.

Earlier in the fall semester, third-year students were asked to design an intermodal hub for a hypothetical citywide public transportation system in Manhattan. Each proposal was to include a transit hall with an information center, a cafe/bistro and public restrooms; a bicycle station; administrative offices; ticketing facility; speculative space for commercial activities; and electrical, mechanical, telephony and janitorial space. Site location, site circulation, and various other exterior requirements such as vehicle and bicycle parking, loading, a taxi/shuttle stand and stormwater retention were additional considerations. The students had 12,480 square feet to work with.

One student from each of five third-year studio sections was then chosen to take their project to the forum for judging by internationally acclaimed architects. This year's guest architects were Coleman Coker, principal of buildingstudio in New Orleans, La., and Marlon Blackwell, a professor of architecture at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Students earning honors and their awards include:

Joshua Hartman, Altamont, $500; Jill Maurer, Topeka, $500; and Jason Ragan, Wichita, $500.

From out of state: Heidi Hyland, Saginaw, Mich., $1,000 first prize; and Ian Orlando, St. Louis, Mo., $500.

The annual forum is named for Brent Bowman, 1972 K-State graduate and a Manhattan architect.
