ROBBIE BEAR RECEIVES HAYMAKER TEACHING AWARD FROM K-STATE'S DIVISION OF BIOLOGY
MANHATTAN -- The Division of Biology at Kansas State University has awarded Robbie Bear, instructor of biology, the 2008 H. Henley Haymaker Teaching Excellence Award.
Bear is being recognized for his outstanding teaching of the undergraduate general education introductory course, Principles of Biology. The award includes a plaque and a $500 stipend.
"Robbie's teaching evaluations are outstanding from both students and faculty peers, who uniformly praise the quality of his teaching, his passion for the subject matter and his creation of a positive learning environment for students," said Brian Spooner, university distinguished professor and director of the Division of Biology.
The Haymaker Teaching Excellence Award is funded by the Haymaker Endowment, in memory of H. Henley Haymaker, a K-State biological sciences professor for 44 years. Prior recipients of the award include Lorena Passarelli and David Rintoul, both associate professors and associate directors of the Division of Biology. The Haymaker Endowment also funds the Haymaker Outstanding Senior Award and the Haymaker Outstanding Graduate Student Research Presentation Award.
"I am truly honored by this award. It is awesome to be rewarded for something I love to do and introducing students to the field of biology, really helping them connect to it is my passion," Bear said. "I enjoy the one-to-one contact possible with students here at K-State and I look forward to meeting many more of them in the coming years."
Bear previously has been recognized for his teaching at K-State with a 2008 William L. Stamey Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined K-State in 2004 after teaching at McCook Community College, McCook, Neb. He earned his master's degree from Cleveland State University in 1995.
