K-STATE STUDENT CHAPTER OF ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE SELECTED AS ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING CHAPTERS IN NATION

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's student chapter of the Architectural Engineering Institute has been selected as one of two outstanding chapters in the nation.

The chapter received the award at the organization's annual national conference in Denver, Colo. The award is in recognition of the effort and success of planning and hosting the National Student Architectural Engineering Institute Conference in Kansas City in April 2007.

This was the first year that outstanding chapter awards were presented.

The K-State student chapter also helps arrange speakers for the monthly architectural engineering seminars and plans general meetings and social activities. In addition, the chapter typically gives out scholarships at the end of the semester to architectural engineering students. The scholarships are presented at the annual department of architectural engineering and construction science awards banquet in May.

Along with organizing the national student conference in 2007, the K-State chapter also led construction site tours, hosted a football tailgate and put on a golf tournament.

"I was very surprised that we won, considering it has been two years since the work to receive this award was done," said Daniel Matlack, graduate student in architectural engineering, Salina, and 2006-2007 student chapter president.

Matlock said the Architectural Engineering Institute is a way for students to learn about all aspects within the architectural engineering field.

"The organization's focus is to facilitate the sharing of ideas between professionals and students in this design field to develop technical understanding and professionalism," he said. "The K-State chapter is a great tool for students in the architectural engineering field. The activities the chapter organizes help members learn about the multiple disciplines -- mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural -- within the architectural engineering field, so that they can find an area that they enjoy and focus their education on. The organization also allows students to see the importance of knowing all disciplines to become a good, well-rounded engineer."

Matlack said he has enjoyed being involved with the Architectural Engineering Institute.

"My best memory of being involved with the organization would be the planning and hosting of the student conference," he said. "It was a lot of work, but it paid off in the professional and student relationships we built all across the United States. It was great to see hundreds of architectural engineering students come and meet. A few students I am sure I will be working with at some point in my life."

Rhonda Wilkinson, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction sciences, serves as faculty adviser to the student chapter.
