K-STATE TRUMPET STUDENTS PERFORM IN PARIS

MANHATTAN -- Six Kansas State University students and faculty member recently got the opportunity to perform in Paris with an international trumpet soloist.

Gary Mortenson, head of K-State's department of music and professor of trumpet, took members of his trumpet studio class to Paris in late November for master classes and performances with Ibrahim Maalouf. The trumpet soloist, who lives in Paris, recently led master classes and took part in concerts at K-State.

While in Paris, the students and Mortenson performed with Maalouf's students from the Conservatoire Superieur de Region de La Cournerve Aubervilliers. The group took part in a master class by Trombamania, a professional trumpet quintet based in Paris.

"The K-State ensemble also got to perform "Capriccio for Six Trumpets" by Allen Vizzutti as a prelude to a concert to promote the CD release of "Solea," Trombamania's new recording just issued by Cristal Records and sponsored by Selmer Musical Instruments in Paris," Mortenson said. "The second encore on the program featured the combined forces of Trombamania, the K-Staters and the Conservatoire Aubervillers performing 'Cityscapes' by Erik Morales."

The students also performed at a concert at the L'Oratoire du Louvre -- just across the street from the famous museum of the same name. The program included "Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury" by Benjamin Britten; "Klezmarab" by Maalouf; "Glory to God in the Highest" by Andreas Hammerschmidt; and Morales' "Cityscapes."

K-State students taking part in the Paris classes and performances include:

From Manhattan: Darren Brooks, graduate student in music; Paul Mueller, graduate student in music; Brian Stuckenschmidt, junior in music education; and Phil Ward, graduate student in music.

Nate Edwards, junior in mechanical engineering, Topeka; and Rebecca Ronen, sophomore in applied music, Wichita.
