K-STATE PROFESSOR CONTRIBUTES TO NEW OKLAHOMA HISTORY AND CULTURE ENCYCLOPEDIA

MANHATTAN -- A new encyclopedia on the history and culture of Oklahoma features the work of a Kansas State University distinguished professor of geography and several of his former students.

Richard Marston, who is also head of K-State's department of geography, contributed 17 entries to the "Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture." The book is available online at:

The print version will be released in spring 2008. It is being published by the Oklahoma Historical Society, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, to mark the 2007 centennial of Oklahoma statehood.

Marston co-wrote the entries with 11 of his former students at Oklahoma State University, where he was a faculty member prior to joining K-State in 2005. The entry titles include "Antelope Hills," "Arbuckle Mountains," "Boston Mountains," "Coastal Plain," "Cookson Hills," "Eastern Lowlands," "Glass Mountains," "Great Plains," "Great Salt Plains," "Kiamichi Mountains," "Osage Plains," "Ouachita Mountains," "Ozark Plateau," "Quartz Mountain," "Shawnee Hills," "Wichita Mountains" and "Winding Stair Mountains."

A distinguished geographer, Marston is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Geological Society of America, the Explorers Club and Royal Geographical Society (U.K.) His many professional recognitions include the 2004 Sterling L. "Bud" Burks Award for Outstanding Environmental Research from the Oklahoma State University Environmental Institute, Oklahoma State's Environmental Institute 2003 Distinguished Faculty Award, 2003 Ronald F. Abler Distinguished Service Honors and appointment to the President's Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission. He has numerous journal and book publications. In addition, he has received nearly $2 million in grants and contracts for his research, including funding from the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey and others.
