MEDIA ARRANGEMENTS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE FORUM AT K-STATE DEC. 17-18
MANHATTAN -- Complimentary registration is available to media members to attend "Agriculture's Role in the New Carbon Economy," a forum sponsored by the Consortium for Agricultural Soil Mitigation of Greenhouse Gases. The forum will be Dec. 17 and 18 at Kansas State University.
The forum, at the K-State Alumni Center, will examine climate change and its potential effects on Kansas, including an update on carbon credit markets for agriculture and cellulosic biofuel production.
The only charge to media will be for meals if attending the banquet Monday, Dec. 17, or the lunch Tuesday, Dec. 18. To register, call Debbie Hagenmaier, K-State Division of Continuing Education, at 785-532-2560 or debbieh@k-state.edu.
Among the speakers at the forum include:
* Debbie Reed, a private consultant from the Washington, D.C., area who knows the latest developments on federal legislation regarding cap-and-trade systems for greenhouse gas emissions.
* Cynthia Cory, a staff member of the California Farm Bureau who will speak on the wide-ranging impact of California's upcoming low-carbon standards and how this will affect agriculture.
* Johannes Feddema, a University of Kansas geographer who will look at the projected effects of climate change on Kansas and agriculture in the state.
* Nathan Clark, a representative of the Chicago Climate Exchange, which operates the U.S. carbon credit market in which farmers in Kansas and other states are currently selling carbon credits.
* Scott Staggenborg and Richard Nelson, K-State researchers who will discuss the implications of cellulosic ethanol production, the newest type of biofuel being promoted.
* Chuck Rice, K-State soils researcher who was part of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that won the 2007 Nobel Peace prize. Rice will discuss the panel's report and work on climate change.
