K-STATE
STUDENT WINS YEARLONG INTERNSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS IN
LONDON
MANHATTAN
-- Kansas State University's Hillary Glasgow, a December 2006 bachelor's
graduate in anthropology, Manhattan, has been selected as
a 2007-2008 Mountbatten Intern. The Mountbatten Internship Programme
places college graduates in a yearlong internship with an international
business in London.
The
internship is worth about $16,000 for the year and also provides
furnished accommodations in central London. Glasgow's internship
will be from March 2007 to March 2008.
The
Mountbatten Internship Programme was founded in 1984. It is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to the promotion of educational and business
links between the United States and the United Kingdom. Interns
must be 21-29 years old at the time their program begins and a citizen
of the United States in order to participate. The program is open
to college graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher.
Glasgow
said she found out about the internship from a flyer she received
while working for K-State's office of international programs last
spring, a job she started after studying abroad in London during
the fall 2005 semester. After researching the internship online,
Glasgow decided the Mountbatten program would be something interesting
to do before going to graduate school.
Glasgow
submitted an application in October that included a personal statement,
resume, photo, transcript and letters of recommendation. A couple
of weeks later she was notified that she had been selected to continue
to the interview stage of the selection process. Her regional interview
took place in Chicago.
"The
interview lasted about an hour and a half," Glasgow said. "Dr.
Harald Prins, a K-State university distinguished professor of anthropology,
had given me a practice interview a couple of days prior to my actual
interview, so I felt well prepared for the real thing. I'm really
fortunate to have professors who put in the effort of helping their
students outside the classroom."
Glasgow
said she learned Nov. 20 of her selection as a Mountbatten Intern.
She is looking forward to the opportunities it will provide.
"London
is such an amazing city and this is a great opportunity to gain
some practical work experience before committing myself to years
of graduate school," she said.
Glasgow
doesn't know which company she will be interning with in March.
Past companies that interns have worked with include the Royal Bank
of Scotland, Citicorp, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch International
Bank Limited and the Prince's Foundation.
Additional
benefits provided by the program include an orientation session
once in London and a certificate in international business practice
from Cambridge University upon completion of the internship.
