K-STATE VOLUNTEER CENTER OF MANHATTAN, UNITED WAY OF RILEY COUNTY COMBINE SERVICE INITIATIVES FOR 'LIVE, SERVE AND CELEBRATE UNITED'
MANHATTAN -- The K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan, the United Way of Riley County and the Aggieville Business Association are inviting Kansas State University students and Manhattan community members to "Live, Serve and Celebrate United."
The event, Saturday, Aug. 29, in Aggieville's Triangle Park, will kick off the K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan's Day of Service and the Riley County United Way's annual campaign and Day of Caring.
"Aggieville was chosen as the site for 'Live, Serve, Celebrate United' because it fully encompasses the campus-community connection," said Dianne Paukstelis, executive director of the United Way of Riley County. "This day of service was created in part for K-State's Week of Welcome to introduce new students to the Manhattan community, other students and to get to know Aggieville businesses."
Lunch will be provided for United Way business leaders from 11 a.m. to noon in the park. Volunteers can then participate in service projects at schools and nonprofit and local organizations around Manhattan and the K-State campus from 12:30-4 p.m.
The "Aggieville Block Party," from 4:30-6 p.m. in the park, will follow. The block party is for community members and students to celebrate service. On hand will be representatives of various Manhattan attractions and organizations. The event also is a way for new K-State students find out about what Manhattan has to offer. The party will feature refreshments and live music by CIMINO from Kansas City.
Volunteers can start signing up for service projects by contacting the United Way at 785-776-3779 or office@unitedwayrc.org; or by contacting the K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan at 785-532-3670 or userve@k-state.edu.
