WORKS FROM SHAWNEE PUBLISHER TO GO ON DISPLAY AT K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

MANHATTAN -- The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University will have the exhibition "A Family Affair: Selections from the Zanatta Editions Archives" Sept. 19 through Jan. 4, 2009.

The exhibition will be on display in the museum's Ruth Ann Wefald Gallery.

Based in Shawnee, Zanatta Editions is an independent publisher of artists' prints, photographs and multiples. It is operated by Joe and Barb Zanatta. In 2004 the Beach Museum acquired the Zanatta Editions archives, which contain publications and related material, such as working and trial proofs, preparatory drawings and proofs from unprinted editions. This exhibition brings together work from the museum's Zanatta holdings.

Zanatta Editions grew out of Joe Zanatta's background in publishing and his interest in art. He worked in book publishing for 20 years, first with Macmillan and then with his own company, Bon A Tirer Publishing. For 10 years Bon A Tirer published the annual "Contemporary Print Portfolio: A Guide to Contemporary Prints & Multiples at Auction," which became an important reference for dealers, collectors and curators. This led the Zanattas to start publishing contemporary artists' prints.

In 1996 Zanatta Editions released its first publication, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith's "Survival," a suite of four lithographs printed by Mike Sims at Lawrence Lithography Workshop. Since that time, Zanatta Editions has published nearly 50 works, often working with master printer Maurice Sanchez at Derriere L'Etoile Studios in New York. Works issued by Zanatta Editions include monotypes by William Christenberry; lithographs by Carey Maxon; and lithographs, monotypes, neon sculptures and photographs by Renee Stout.

The Beach Museum continues to acquire examples of Zanatta works through purchases and donations.

The Beach Museum is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus at 14th Street and Anderson Avenue. Free visitor parking is available next to the building. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays.
