K-STATE FRATERNITY HOUSE REPAIRS DAMAGE DONE BY ROOF-RAISING TORNADO

MANHATTAN -- Two months after a tornado ripped off much of its roof and let in torrential rains, a fraternity house can welcome members for the new school year at Kansas State University.

"There's a little bit of touching up left, but for the most part we are finished with construction," said Brady Ott, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The fraternity chapter has its permit of occupancy, so returning members and incoming pledges now have a home as fall semester classes at K-State get under way.

The June 11 tornado tore about half of the roof from fraternity house at 1015 Denison Ave., said Ott, an Evergreen, Colo., senior in architectural engineering. Flooding added to the toll.

"The south end of the house was basically gutted," he said. Haren Laughlin, a Kansas City construction and restoration firm, replaced drywall, flooring and much of the wiring.

"It's pretty incredible that we were able to redo half our house in under two months," Ott said. "We had a lot of backing and a lot of support from alums and all across campus, and we really appreciate it."

The storm damage had a silver lining, Ott said, in that it forced the fraternity to complete some other house projects at the same time.
