USDA NATIONAL SCIENCE PROGRAM LEADER TO PRESENT NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL BIOSECURITY CENTER FORUM AT K-STATE ON PROTECTION OF PLANT RESOURCES

MANHATTAN -- The protection of plant resources from pests and disease will be the topic of a National Agricultural Biosecurity Center Forum at Kansas State University.

Dan Fieselmann, National Science Program leader for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's Plant Protection and Quarantine, will present "Strategies for Safeguarding American Plant Resources" at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in Room 213 of the K-State Student Union.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is being held as part of the monthly forum series organized by the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center. The forum is designed to facilitate campuswide, interdisciplinary interaction to advance K-State's agricultural and food security programs. Fieselmann's lecture is co-sponsored by the K-State's departments of geography and plant pathology.

Fieselmann's responsibilities include pest survey and detection, identification, biocontrol, spatial technology and offshore initiatives. He has contributed to a variety of biosecurity programs during his 32 years in Plant Protection and Quarantine in Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, the Netherlands and North Carolina. He also served as chair of the steering committee for the safeguarding review that established the course for Plant Protection and Quarantine for the 21st century.

While visiting K-State, Fieselmann also will meet with researchers in the department of geography's Geographic Information Systems Spatial Analysis Laboratory and in the department of plant pathology to discuss ongoing collaborative projects that are assessing the potential for agricultural pest and disease dispersal within the United States.
