K-STATE'S WENDY ORNELAS ELECTED TO ARCHITECTURE ACCREDITING BOARD

MANHATTAN -- Wendy Ornelas, associate dean of the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design, has been elected a director of the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

She is one of three members nominated by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture to represent the organization on the accrediting group's 14-person board for a term that runs through 2010, when she will serve as board president.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture. Most states require applicants for licensure to have graduated from a program accredited by the board. There are currently 140 such accredited programs at 115 institutions offering bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees in architecture.

Ornelas has been a member of the K-State faculty since 1989. She is a member of the graduate teaching faculty, director of the college's doctoral program in environmental design and planning, and is director of the department of architecture's internship program. She has received widespread recognition for her teaching.

Ornelas is the first woman and first Latina in Kansas to achieve fellowship in the American Institute of Architects. The institute's Kansas chapter presented Ornelas with its 2006 Henry W. Schirmer distinguished service award.

The firm of Condia and Ornelas, in which she is a partner, received design awards for Coco Bolo's Grille and Cantina and Thomas Joseph Studio One. The firm's other designs include the Mercado gourmet store, GAIA salon and della Voce restaurant, all in Manhattan.

Ornelas earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Oklahoma State University.
