K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC RECOGNIZES STUDENT EXCELLENCE
MANHATTAN -- The department of music at Kansas State University has recognized several students for excellence with special honors, including the department's top undergraduate scholarship.
Sarah Bartel, a senior in music performance, Cimarron, is the department's 2008 Presser Undergraduate Scholar. The award, which recognizes excellence and includes a significant monetary award, is given to an outstanding music major at, or after the end of his or her junior year. The selection is made by faculty of the department.
Bartel, the daughter of Harlan and Karla Bartel, has been a student in the studio of David Littrell, K-State university distinguished professor of music. Her primary instrument is the cello, but she also has studied piano, viola da gamba and double bass as well. She is principal cellist of the K-State Orchestra and also participates in various chamber ensembles, including the Living Hope String Quintet with her four sisters. She was the recipient of the department of music's Outstanding Music Major award in both her freshman and sophomore years.
The music department also has recognized three students for their performances in the Spring 2008 Honors Recital competition. Selections were made by a faculty committee and cash prizes awarded.
"The Honors Recital features our best students across all our performance divisions. In many ways this event is the culmination of our academic year, and an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the best efforts of our best students," said Gary Mortenson, head of the department of music.
Honors Recital winners include:
Travis Keller, graduate student in music, Ellis, second place for his euphonium performance; Chris Johnson, senior in music education, Marquette, first place for his clarinet performance; and ReBecca Smith, junior in music performance, Topeka, second place for her mezzo soprano vocals.
